My classic 9 won't open any more on my G4

Nov 4, 2006 1:32AM PST

I am currently running Mac OSX on my G4. For some reason my classic 9 won't run any more. I can't open any programs that run on classic 9. I tried to reinstall classic 9 from the installation disk and that won't run either. Anything that has to do with classic 9 won't run.

OS 9 (Classic)

When you go to the Startup Pane in System Preferences, can you select OS 9 as the Startup disk?
If you can, select it and restart the machine. It "should" boot into OS 9 as long as that OS is not corrupted.

Was OS 9 on the same drive as OS X? It doesn't matter if it was, I was just wondering if it was on another drive and that drive was not functioning

firmware

Didn't there used to be a requirement that there be a firmware update prior to installing the OS X and that this HAD to be done while booted into the OS 9 before upgrading to the OS X ? so that "classic could work.

Yes, you are correct.

However, in this case, OS 9 was running quite well until something happened.

I note we have not had any replies from the original poster

Firmware + OS 9
Dec 6, 2006 12:07AM PST

I googled your forum on the subject. I have a similar problem having loaded OS X on my G3. OSX is ok but I can't open 9 anymore. Is there anything I can do? Can I go back? I am a mac novice and it is doing my head in not knowing how to do stuff. I'm sure the PC/Mac rivalry is just what you're used to!
Can you help?

Which G3 did you install OS X on
Dec 6, 2006 1:49AM PST

and what version of OS X was it?

I understand that after you installed OS X, System 9 did not function at all.
Check in the System Preferences for the Classic Pane and make sure that you have pointed the system to the correct System 9 folder. It will be referred to as Classic.
Make sure you have selected the System 9 folder and then click on Start Classic.

What happened?

Which G3 and what OSX?
Dec 10, 2006 2:54AM PST

First, sorry for delay in replying. I asked for an email if anyone answered and didn't get one.

It's a Power PC G3 - 450 MHz with 384 MB (I don't know how else to describe it except that it's a beautiful cyan blue!)
I loaded Mac OS X 10.4.8

I looked at System Preferences > Classic > and on the 'Start/Stop page > 'Select a system folder for Classic' is pointed to main hardrive and then 'System Folder'.

This folder when looked at in Finder has a '9' on it so I guess it's the right one.

Classic tries to start and the bar gets almost to the end but sticks and that's that!!

Is there anything I can do?

Sounds like an iMac

Hopefully you still have your OS 9 installation disk that came with that machine.

Using the installer, you can reinstall OS 9 using the "Clean Install" option.

Do you still have the disks?

G3 and Classic not opening
Dec 30, 2006 11:54PM PST

Way back before the onslaught of Christmas, you asked if I had the original disc to reinstall OS9. Unfortunately I do not as this is a secondhand machine. Everything seems to work ok without so does it really matter? I can get programs that work with OSX and not use Classic at all. Happy New Year!!

That is by far the best solution

You actually do not need Classic if all your applications are OS X native.

Glad to see that you have finally kicked Classic into touch.

Happy New Year to you, too.

Classic not working etc
Jan 1, 2007 6:21PM PST

I don't know enough about how things work on a Mac. You say I do need Classic? I haven't solved the problem but have just left it really.
Can you point me towards any online training in the nuts and bolts of the Mac insides? It's easy to find training courses on PC's - they are everywhere. Or should I buy a book? (Don't get on with books very well but if there is nothing else)

Classic
Jan 1, 2007 8:56PM PST

I thought my reply was pretty clear.

You do NOT NEED CLASSIC if all your applications are written for OS X.

Classic was designed as an interim measure so that early adopters of OS X were not without those applications that had, at the time, not been converted to OS X.
Almost all apps have now been converted, it's been over 6 years, and the use of Classic has diminished. OS 9 was not loaded on any machine just prior to the introduction of the Intel Macs and is no longer available for use on any new Mac. The Intel Mac cannot run OS 9 (Classic)

As for a book, try OS X for Dummies. If you can find the version for Tiger, so much the better. You donot need to know the "nuts and bolts" of the system, just how to operate it. The best was to learn that is to play with it.

Good luck

So sorry, I read that wrong! I will relax on the whole thing and get the book. Thanks again for your help and patience. Regards,
