My CD drive will not reconize a CD

Feb 14, 2004 3:45PM PST

My CD Drive will not reconize any cd put into it. I have a digital drive (which I regulary mount .bin and .cue files) and I have my regular 48x combo drive. So now when I put in a regular CD (iv tried at least 6) my cd drive does nothing, it doesnt do any reaction at all. a few times when I had my computer loaded it refreshed itself when I put in a CD, but it acted as if I put in a blank one. Every time if there is a CD or not it acts as if there is a blank CD in there. does anyone know what to do or how to help me? thanks

A first step in troubleshooting this would be to swap with a known good drive. They do go bad.

What happens if you open the CD manually ? What error message(s), if any, do you get ?

When did the problem start ? Are you able to roll back, using System Restore ?

The first thing is to determine whether the drive is the problem or Windows is the problem. Boot with a Win98 boot disk ( http://home.csumb.edu/o/olsenwilliam/world/boot98.exe ), don't worry, it will work on an XP machine. At the A:\ type in your CD drive letter and hit enter. At that prompt, type in " dir " (make sure you have a cd in the drive) If the drive is working, the files will show up. Then you know that XP for some reason is not picking up the drive. Could be a corrupted driver.

Another method to check the drive is boot the system from a 98 boot floppy. Once you choose to start computer with cdrom support, and have a cd loaded (use an operating system disk), You should hear the disk spin up once it completes the loading of all the DOS SCSI drivers. At that point you can type in the drive parameter the boot floppy provided at the end of the command line sequence, then use DIR command string to see if the files appear. If so the drive is not the issue! DOS tells all!

1. Start XP w/ nothing in CD Drive.
2. Go to start --> Run --> MSCONFIG
3. Last tab (Startup) & Disable all items in startup
4. OK selection, Restart computer
5. Try CD again.
Also check if there are 2 or more device drivers in the "system" item in control panel. Go to system --> Device Manager. In device manager tab, select DVD/CDROM drives & expand selection (click on plus) to identify CDROM. If there is more than one, you have a conflict with drivers.

Check the device manager and see if theres more than one driver installed for your cdrom. If not you may need to do something as simple as updating the aspi for your driver. or the drives gone bad. Are these cds you've created? because the other thing you might want to try is to put in a regular music cd and see if it works.
