Mar 1, 2004 12:36AM PST

My CD Burner is a Memorex 52x32x52. It was working fine then all of a sudden it won't burn CD's anymore. My CD burning software won't even recognize it as a burner. My OS is XP. System is a 1.8Gz Celeron w/750 meg of ram.Anyone have any ideas ? Thanks

Try checking with your cdburning software program website to see if there is an update for it. Or uninstall your software and reinstall it after rebooting to see if it will now recognize your burner again like it did before. Some other program you might have recently installed may have thrown it for a loop.

The highest failure rate we see in computers is with the CD drive. This is almost always due to the drive itself going bad. Fortunately you can buy new burners today for $35 or less.

About all you can do is try and clean it with a lens cleaner, but when the software can no longer see it your are limited to checking the cables and making sure they are still connected properly (maybe you were in the case and loosened something).

If you don't see a hardware connection issue then you really need to just replace it.
