If you do a Google search for this problem on the S2is, you will find many people with the same problem.
But you will not find any one solution for all cases.
First you need to verify that it is not a battery problem.
That means, buy some new AA alkaline batteries and replace your batteries.
Those new alkaline batteries should work for around 50 pictures or more.
If they do not work at all, start looking for the unconventional.
1. If the camera has been dropped, it is likely the lens housing is bent or out of alignment and the small motor can not extend the lens. You can try a bit of pressure. Lay the camera on its back and check the rings that make up the lens barrel. Look straight down and See if the rings are equal distance apart. If not, gently press down on one side of the rings in an effort to make them equal distance apart on all sides.
Gently!
2. It is possible that the batteries are not making good contact in the battery compartment.
When you shut the battery door, it should take a bit of pressure to get it closed.
If not, the springs in the bottom of the battery compartment may be too weak.
You can also wipe both ends of the batteries with a clean dry cloth to make sure they are clean.
You should do the same for the electrical contacts on the battery door and the bottom of the battery compartment.
And make sure that the polarity of the batteries is correct. Check the manual and make sure you have the plus and minus ends correct.
