General discussion

my 3 yr old uses my camera like a pro but ...

Dec 13, 2009 12:09PM PST

I am looking to buy my 3 yr old a camera for Christmas but I would like something that won't break if his brother hits it out of his hand. All of the cameras geared toward children seem to have the 2 eye hole thing and I don't want that because he is already used to a "real" camera's one eye piece idea. Also most of them are themed which I don't like. Cost isn't really an issue although I don't want to go really crazy. I just want something durable that takes good pics. He has been using my Sony Cyber-shot 5.0 and Canon PowerShot SX10IS but I worry that they will drop and that will be the end. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as really that is all he wants for Christmas this year. Thanks for any help.

Camera For A Three Year Old

Here is a link to a Fisher Price camera with LCD:

Most digital cameras are fragile and will not survive being dropped.
There are several "tough" cameras available.
They can be dropped (within reason).
They are also dust-proof and waterproof.
But they will probably cost about $300.

Olympus has several models available.
Stylus Tough 6000/6010 and Stylus Tough 8000.

Pentax has 2 Tough cameras.
W80 and WS80

I like the photos from the Canon Tough camera best.

Cameras for 3 year old
Dec 14, 2009 5:35AM PST

I bought the Fisher Price camera for my son when he was about 3 year old. That camera was heavy and images were poor. He lost interest in it in about 5 minutes.

He used my old Sony V1 and Canon SD500, and learned how to take some decent photos. He lost interest in cameras after about a few weeks. Recently he got his hands on my G10...

Bottom line is don't try to spend too much money on a new camera for your 3 year old. Their interests change frequently. And they like your newer and better camera, they know what is better even at that age. I tried to tell my 3 year old that his Fisher Price camera was bigger and better but he did not believe a word of it, probably caused some damage on my credibility. Let them use an old camera, and if it breaks, then buy a new one for yourself.
