General discussion

My 3 year old

May 20, 2006 12:30AM PDT

We were watching a PBS show on baboons and the king baboon ran and caught a baby impala. He was sitting there eating it when she said, ?What?s he doing daddy?? and I said ?He?s eating his yum.? She said ?What?s he eating??. I said ?He?s eating pizza.? to which she replied, ?No daddy, he?s eating the baby deer.? I thought she would freak if she knew he was eating the deer.

Welcome, newcomer grandparent!

Grandmother? Grandfather?

There are a bunch of us in SE! And we are all as proud as punch of our grandchildren!

You identified yourself as being new to computers. I'll try to address some things.

If you tell us what you use - waht you click on- to search the internet and what you use for email, we might be able to tell you what operating sustem you are using.

If you bought your machine at a store, your operating system is probably Windows. If it is new, you are probably using Windows XP. If you look at your sales record, it will have everything on your computer listed. That is what our Help forums need to know to iffer you advice. I suggest "Computer Newbies" for initial questions. The manufacturer of your machine is noted somewhere on the system... on the monitor, the tower (where the "guts" are Happy )

However, you are steps ahead as you already know how to "surf", and to use email, which puts you ahead of a lot of people!

I am also a senior, retired.

YOU ARE VERY KIND
May 20, 2006 3:18AM PDT

I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A CHAT ROOM BEFORE. I AM A GRANDMOTHER OF TWO FINE YOUNG BOYS.

I HAVE A NEW DELL COMPUTER. IT IS MUCH SMALLER IN SIZE THAN MY OLD ONE. I KEEP IT IN MY SPARE BEDROOM. I HAVE WINDOWS XP. I DID NOT KNOW WHAT AN OPERATING SYSTEM WAS. WHERE DID YOU LEARN SO MANY THINGS?

THIS IS SO EXCITING MEETING NEW FRIENDS; WITH EQUALLY FRIENDLY ADVICE.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

A small request...
May 20, 2006 3:31AM PDT

The all capital letters is kind of hard on the eyes. Do you think you could take off the Caps Lock key? Or if it's a physical problem with typing, even all lower case would probably be easier to read.

Thanks.

EdH is right.

As you are new to this, it comes under the heading of ""Net Etiquette".

(I read your profile, which is why I talked about the operating system.)

It sounds like you bought the Dell 200 with the smaller tower. It looks like a fine choice. I've also looked at it on their web site.

Where I learned.... let me count the ways.

From my internet provider's tech support, from my manufactuer's tech support, from reading the CNet Help forums, and from the good folks in SE. I have not been one to not ask questions.Happy The moderators in the Help forums are just that - helpful! But they need the information I noted above.

Thing is, fellow grandmother, I am still learning! It's an on-going process. Happy

IS THIS WHAT YOU MEANT?
May 20, 2006 8:36AM PDT

I do not need to use uppercase. I sit closer to my monitor if I can't see the fonts. This is all so new; but fun. My first test in a chat room and I didn't pass.
Can you recommend other discussions in this forum? Some seem very lively.

Welcome aboard, Seanrush!

As to other fora that I'd recommend, I'd start with all the help fora if your PC gets as cranky as I am prone to get on occasion. Happy

Again, welcome to SE!

Fora is.....
May 20, 2006 9:51AM PDT

.... a plural for forums when we go by classical Latin.

Here are the fora in the CNet comunity.

Most of them offer help and advice for different problems related to computers and other electronics.

CNet is a corporation well regarded in the industry, and sets the rules, which are at:

Frequently asked questions about the forums (fora) are at:

Speakeasy is a discussion forum of general topics. All of the forums are moderated,

Yes, the caps lock off reads much nicer. This is also true for the subject line.

But [B}you did not mess up! We were all once new !!!

Always remember, DM,...

Also remember that they'll alert you of that fact only when it is in their best interests to do so. Devil
