Question

My 160 GB ipod is dead. new ipod or iphone w/icloud

Oct 15, 2011 4:59AM PDT

Hey everyone. I had a 160 GB ipod that has just died on me. I can't really grasp all this Icloud business. I haven't bought much music on Itunes, but I do have about 150 GB of music. Would I be better off buying a new Ipod or buying the Iphone 4s and using the Icould to house all my music? Pros and cons?

If you choose an iPod with WiFi and you have unlimited (no data limit) access to WiFi whereever you are and whenever you are there (also on your next holiday to, say, Mexico or Thailand) then using storage in the cloud might be a good idea. If not, I'd go for storage that's always with you.

The problem

as I see it is that the Cloud could fail at any time. True, iCloud is Apple's version of Cloud storage and I don't expect Apple to fail anytime soon, but as we have seen just this last week with RIM's Blackberry, server failures can make a real mess of internet access and Cloud users could be locked out for days at a time.

You have 150 GB of music stored locally and that's great, your backup plan has worked well.

Personally I am just not fully prepared to trust online storage at this time unless I have fool-proof alternatives.
