Resolved Question

Must re-seat lamp every time tv turned off

Feb 16, 2015 7:15AM PST

I have a Samsung HL-S6186W. The tv is approximately 8 years old and 2 days ago, I installed my 4th bulb, but probably didn't need to?

I was getting all three flashing lights on the front of the set when I replaced the bulb. I figured it was because I did try one of those knockoff bulbs middle of last year. Luckily, I was able to find a Phillips bulb I purchased a few years back, and installed it.

TV came on and worked fine. Next day (today) 3 flashing lights again. I did take the entire back of the TV off today, and the fan looked fine. There was some dust build up as you would expect, but I decided to see if re-seating the bulb would solve the problem.

Put everything back together, and the TV came on and is working fine. I feel certain the next time I turn it off, I will get 3 flashing lights again. Do I need a new ballast? I'm ok with that, I think the ballast for my model on Amazon is $67. Is the consensus this would resolve my issue if I need to re-seat the lamp every day to get the set to turn on? Or are there other ideas?

Time for repairs.

Your guess is good, mine would be that plus a power board. I will not give consensus since folk have exploded when guessing without working directly on the set.

Thanks for the report.

I hope you understand why I can only nod to that diagnosis. I can't see the set so I can't see if any other clues or signs.

Good to read you succeeded.
