Start simple...

If you're into making beats I'd start with Fruity Loops, and if you need actual audio recording software on top of that start with Audacity. Both have free versions (last I knew). That will help you develop a work flow and get an idea of the features you'll want in a more professional software suite.

Another thing... Visit (and bookmark) http://tweakheadz.com/ - read The Guide. Everything you need to know about getting a home studio going from the ground up in plain English.

Good luck!

That title was spammed so much.

Now you see what happens when folk spam a title like that.

If they resort to spamming forums, it can't be good.
