Music Sharing Over Network

Jul 18, 2010 10:07AM PDT

I have a PC connected to my Router that is running WInXP. As you can imagine, in my amateur days, I set up music sharing via iTunes. I just got a new laptop with a 2.2 gHz processor/4GB RAM. I set it up with a beautiful dual-boot Ubuntu and Win7. However the new versions of iTunes don't allow any other program to pick up the music on the network. Is there a program that can pick up the itunes music or maybe a program that has linux and windows versions that can share my music?

I have tried to put iTunes on WINE, but it did not pick up my shared music on the network.

You can stream net radio with VLC, share files over torrent or other p2p networks set up ftp server.
But sharing music may be pirating. Be careful.

I mean sharing between my computers at home through my wireless network. I did it with itunes but the new itunes won't allow other programs to pick up it's music through the network.

DAAP or DNLA
Aug 4, 2010 11:22PM PDT

You should look for a program that does either DAAP sharing (as the old versions of iTunes did) or DNLA sharing (probably the better option as it's a standard for streaming audio and video to consumer electronics devices).

Mediatomb and Firefly can create DNLA shares on Linux, and Tangerine can create DAAP shares on Linux. No idea on Windows software, sorry. Most Linux music players can be a client with these sorts of shares, including Ubuntu's preinstalled Rhythmbox software.
