A very famous singer said that "Something" was the best song written by someone. Who was it? And what was his mistake?

... and did a Google search.

Found this...

Harrison, often called the quiet Beatle, illustrated his musical range and diverse interests with his seamless transitions from such rollicking rock classics as "Long Tall Sally" to wistful soft songs like "Something," one of the songs that he penned. His other writing credits include "Here Comes the Sun," "Taxman," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," and "Don't Bother Me." He was influenced by guitar masters Chuck Berry and Carl Perkins.

...there's a sure-fire way to tell who wrote (in whole or in the majority) a Beatles song, even those attributed to Lennon-McCartney: just pay attention to who sings lead on the recording!

True but not always...

Back in the U.S.S.R. is sung by Ringo for example... So is Yellow Submarine. And both are written by Lennon-McCartney.

And the early songs are usually written by both Lennon and McCartney but sung by one of them. But yes, you are right, when it comes to the later albums, it is pretty easy to tell by who is singing. Apart from that you can tell by the music! There is a huge difference between "I am the Walrus", "Something" and "Ob-la-di Ob-La-Da"...

"Back in the USSR" is sung by Paul, who is also playing drums on it. Paul is also the drummer on "Birthday."

There are also a couple of Lennon/McCartney songs sung by George -- "I'm Happy Just to Dance with You" and "Do You Want to Know a Secret."

Thanks for the correction and you don't have to feel sorry, Josh!

I was wrong on that one! And I doubted about it too... But you are right, Back in the USSR is sung by Paul. I knew he played the drums on Birthday but had no clue he did it on Back in the USSR too... It is good to learn Something every day. Happy

Throughout Sinatra's many performances of this song, he always introduced it as the song by Lennon and McCartney, never giving the credit to Harrison who actually wrote it!
