music, movies etc that skip on hard drives

i'm running a ibm thinkpad with xp on it wmp 11 and winamp 5.0. the problem i'm having is that all of my music on my hard drive as well as any cd or movie i put in skip when i'm playing them "skip" as in they get stuck on a note and don't want to continue for anwheres from 2 to 30 seconds.

any idea what might cause this to happen?

Low on resources or too many background processes

You didn't mention the model, OS or how much RAM but WMP 11 is XP and higher. If you're low on memory or have other processes taking CPU priority, music has to wait. Check msconfig and see what runs at startup that's not needed. Also make sure you don't have an AV or other program that's looking for updates too often. You can disable about anything that runs at startup as an experiment and re-enable later if it doesn't help or has ill effects on use.

That's fairly normal.

WMP 11 is rather 'heavy' on CPU load so let's try just one thing before we point at WMP.

There could driver issues but your post doesn't write about "Hey I just installed XP."
