Music Filenames - Need Suggestions

Nov 2, 2005 3:38AM PST

Hi,

I'm attempting to clean up my music files and one of the things that I need to do is fix a whole mess of different file names. I need some suggestions here though.

I understand that <track number><song title> is a very good way to go because it's easy to read on a digital music player, which is important for me as I use one. Problem is, sometimes I end up with large lists of tracks mixed up but listed numerically (meaning that I will have track 01 from several albums listed, then track 02 and so on. Are there suggestions regarding file structure that I should know about to help with this? Should I add artist info in the filename after the <track number><song title> for those songs with the same title that appear on different albums or both artist and album? Are there disadvantages to adding this info?

My other problem with the track number first file naming that I'm looking for a workaround on is creating mp3 cd's. It lists all the track 01's then track 02's and I have no way of changing the file list (at least that I know of). Any ideas how to do this?

Basically, I just need to know the best file naming system and why (should I use spaces, underscores, hyphens, info I should include and or leave out and what order that info should be in).

Looking forward to your replies! Thanks in advance.

Rachel

Here's my system, works rather well

What I do is do AlbumTitle>TrackNum>SongTitle. This lets me easily burn CD's, automatically sorting everything, and gets around the bunches of 01files.
