music downloads

I download music from the internet onto my hard drive. It's all in mp3 format. When I burn to blank cd it will not play on my (oldish)cd player. Is there any software out there that will enable me to switch existing downloads to a playable format, and anything that will enable me to download future internet music purchases in non mp3 format? (I used to be able to do that from the now defuct Virgin Music site.)
