Multiple scanner installations in XP

May 27, 2005 4:16PM PDT

I have a UMAX 2400S scanner which is installed with a SCSI board. After switching from Win98 to WinXP with SP2 installed, for some reason multiple instances of the scanner started appearing in the control panel. Control Panel now shows 8 of the same scanners installed. I've deleted all of the scanners and then rebooted, but XP again finds 8 scanners even though there is only 1.
XP will not recognize the SCSI scanner unless it is turned on before booting up. I've tried deleting all of the scanners, rebooting with the scanner off---no scanner shows as installed---then rebooting again with the scanner on. XP "finds" new hardware again, 8 instances of the scanner.
Does anyone know how to correct this problem? or what may be causing it?

the number 8

from memory, that is the max number units in series you can have on one SCSI card - maybe there is something wrong with the device number - check your manual and see how to change the device ID number on the scanner or perhaps the number is wrong in the software settings - if it is on 8 try setting to 1.
Hope this helps - just a stab in the dark really!

Are you sure it is compatible with XP?

Yes, the scanner works, it's just that there are 8 scanners shown as hardware attached...

I am not too sure about SCSI devices, but try deleting at Device Manager in Safe Mode.

In safe mode the SCSI devices don't show at all. When I go to control panel no scanner is shown---it doesn't recognize the scsi connected scanner at all.

I check the SCSI IDs again.

The scanner works. In Device manager all 8 show that the scanner is working OK and all 8 show: Bus number 0, TargetID 2, Lun 0.
Does this mean anything to you?

Have a look...

At the back of your scanner - you may see a dial with numbers (0-7)- this should be set to 2 if you are getting ID 2
Mine is set to ID 0 and the ID reported is also 0

If this is your only device on the chain it is best to set it to 0 to avoid termination problem - in the old days you had to put a plug on the last device so that your computer knew there was no more devices.
So try and set it to "0"
BUT your user manual should recommend what the best setting is.

And when I set it to 7...

On many SCSI cards, you get the issue noted.
