Multiple problems with ME, scan dsk, sys rest, display

I am running ME. All of a sudden everything is very large and colors are off. In Control Panel, Display,Settings. it is saying 640x480 and 16 colors. I change it to 16 bit or 256 colors and 800 x 600 and it will not change. When I click on the Advanced button I get a Runtime Error message; C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.32.EXE
"abnormal program termination".
Also Scan Disk will not run saying Windows or another program is trying to write to this drive but I have nothing else running at the time.
I tied to restore to before this happened and Sysytem Restore says I have no restore points available. There are no highlighted dates in August and it will not let me go back to July
Very often when I open a web page I get a Runtime Error message. It asks me if I want to debug, I say yes and it says no debuggers available.
I have McAfee Virus Scan and Firewall Plus, Spybot and Adaware installed. I have tried disabling them and the results are the same. I do not have a virus and no spyware.
Can you please help. I am going nuts.
Jackie

Zonealarm can cause the scandisk to do that. Sorry to read your woes, but if you type SCANDISK 10 TIMES into google.com you find the article about that. Since Zonealarm has no true disable, you have to uninstall it or ask Zonelabs how to fix it.

As to 16 colors, that's the video driver. Reinstall the video driver.

Hi Bob
Thanks for your reply. I tried disabling eveything except Explorer and run Scan Disk and it still won't run.
The other problem is I can't get a Sysytem Restore point either in order to go backwards.
About the Video Driver to install : how do I do that. I am not very experienced in Computer things.
What is Zonelabs and how would I disable it or contact them?
Thanks
Jackie

Zonelabs is the company that gave you Zone Alarm.

As to the scandisk/defrag issue, I take it that you didn't take my hint on how to use Google.com to find the necessary article. Next time, be sure to tell that.

System Restore does fail with some versions of Zone Alarm. I don't offer any fix for that. Ask Zonelabs.

Have you tried running Scan in Safe Mode? I have ZA and have never had trouble with it affecting scandisk.
