Question

Multiple issue, i'm going crazy

May 11, 2018 5:39PM PDT

Hello,

12/2017 - Motherboard : MSI Tomahawk B350

12/2017 - CPU : Ryzen 5 1600(2x120mm AIO water cooler)

12/2017 - RAM : G.Skill Ripjaws 3200Mhz CL16-16-16-36 (2x4g).

04/2017 - GPU : Sapphire RX480

I already posted on reddit yesterday , quick resume: My Ryzen 5 1600 was stable at 4GHZ, 1.34V but it's not stable anymore. 3,9GHZ is stable at that voltage now. But multiple issue are here now:

1-While mining(CPU&GPU) using nicehash and there are random short freeze every minute. Didn't tried gaming yet.

2-I was checking my ram by using one stick each time to check if my cpu was able to stay at 4ghz, they both acted the same but after testing that now i can't boot with both stick(Computer running, no display) CPU&RAM debug led are on.

3-I was struggling for 1 hour to start my computer with 1 ram stick, Hard lock while in the bios, gpu error, cpu&ram debug led on or same as 2. Tried to clear the CMOS multiple time but it didn't do anything.

Right now i'm writing this on this computer, i'm scared to touch anything, what could be the problem?

What i already did :

Bios update

Gpu driver update

Clean windows 10 install

clear CMOS

Crying

tried other gpu

Unplugging and plugging back most of the cable

Reseated ram & CPU

Pc is dust free

Crying harder

Tried to keep XMP profile with higher voltage

1.2v SOC voltage

Using stock ram setting

Memtest with both stick 2 time for 7hours didn't show any error

Isn't this just a 3.6GHz max boost rate CPU?

Ryzen overclocked

I directly overclocked it when i got it, 4Ghz stable until now. 3,9Ghz is still nice of course but i want my 4Ghz back Sad

Boards age and that does drop.
May 12, 2018 9:22AM PDT

Electrolytic capacitors age quickly and you see the drops in just weeks. If you must get it back you are looking at replacing boards, ram etc. Nothing is wrong here. You are getting more than its rated speed.

The PSU and all other parts?

Solid doesn't mean no aging either.

Just my electronics designer knowledge kicking in.

Overclocking is just like this. If you get it all together and hit 4.0 then later it will be some other maximum. The real pros at overclocking know this and don't moan on and on (or whine.) They will max it out then pull back a notch so they don't have as many issues.

They are probably fine
May 12, 2018 1:56PM PDT

I can only see one(look fine) and the other one are hidden behind a heatsink.

I wasn't going to go there.
May 12, 2018 2:00PM PDT

But if you look at capacitor aging charts the decline is very quick. You seem to insist that such a decline should happen but as I am an electronics designer I know about this industry's not so secret secrets.

If you feel this is something you can claim warranty on, then that's your next step.

As to why 3.9 may be faster that could be the usual issue where the CPU is faster than the memory system and incurs another wait state. By matching the speeds better, you may see overall benchmark improvements.

That drives folk nuts.

Did you use new thermal paste on CPU?

Yes i did, and it's not overheating.

Overclock

Set everything back to stock speed and voltage.

If everything runs error free you can start walking it up a piece at a time until you find the limit.

If you can't get back to 4Ghz it would seem to say some part has changed/aged.

I doubt you could make a warranty claim because you can't overclock to the value you want.

Issue still happening at stock speed
May 12, 2018 4:07AM PDT

Some of the issue are still happening when i'm running at stock speed:

I rebooted my computer, After the bios window, my hdd wasn't detected, i had to restart it again.
And issue number 1 is still here

I only used it for 6 month it's weird that it has aged that fast.

You have 2 issues.

1. sometimes the hdd is not detected at boot.

2. stutter during mining.

Is that correct?

Stutter during GPU mining
May 12, 2018 2:06PM PDT

Right now the only issue i have is the stutter while gpu mining.
It's happening every 1-2 minute and it will stutter 3 times 1 second in 6 second.(Wasn't happening before). Every time it stutter ther are 2 event created in the event viewer:
-4624 : An account was successfully logged on.
-4672 : Special privileges assigned to new logon.

Those other problem are not here anymore but they are probably going to come back soon

two problems
May 12, 2018 8:24AM PDT

Either the HDD is having a problem that is causing this, or the BIOS needs to be shorted to reset it's program. Also check to be sure you have the latest BIOS flashed to it.

Bios is not the problem
May 12, 2018 2:11PM PDT

Already cleared cmod multiple times, bios is up-to-date. Might be the HDD...

While I think stutter is fine during mining.

I've run into folk that disagree. Anyhow, any chance of that web speccy?

May 12, 2018 9:24AM PDT

On mining? Did I read that right? The machine is under load and there will be delays when at full load.

Check 01 and 07 of the hard disks (even ssd) with Speccy. It must be clean or you get odd delays now and then.

Need the forum to read that report? See how at https://www.piriform.com/docs/speccy/using-speccy/publishing-a-speccy-profile-to-the-web

In parting, Ryzens are notorious about requiring the latest BIOS. I always update that when starting a new build.

"Current: 103

I've had folk want to debate this one. I won't do that. I see the drives as the usual with the usual issues and know what to do next. Here's the deal. You get to live with this cranky PC. I don't have to since I already fixed mine and so many others.

This drive is fine with the raw and other values not showing the issues your drives are showing.

Get more reports and compare so you can catch up on how to spot these drive issues.

UPDATE - Saturday 12
May 12, 2018 10:52AM PDT

Woke up today plugged everything back(With XMP and 3,9 on my ryzen). I had a few issue to boot but right now it's stable(While in windows). Those short freeze suddently disapered. I'm still at 3,9Ghz BUT my cpu performance are better than before??? I'm getting a 10-25% boost in fps ingame? Maybe i was using a bad overclock since the beginning?(But it was stable in multiple stress test). I don't know, i just don't know everyday something new is happening. i'll keep you guys updated, if there are any change! Thank you all for your help!

I see I mentioned it but no report from you.

Good luck
May 12, 2018 2:14PM PDT

With this op.

Your dealing with someone who is fixated on overclocking.

They refuse to get the machine to run problem free at stock speeds.

Same problem at stock speed
May 12, 2018 3:14PM PDT

At stock speed i'm still having this issue. :/ I'm just trying to understand why those thing are happening...

As long as you overclock, mine
May 12, 2018 3:21PM PDT

And I don't see the report, all these things have me writing it's something in the mix above.

That is, if you feel this machine shouldn't be doing this, take this up as a warranty issue.

I know it's tough on folks new to this work. But not sharing is not helping.

Answer
A Speccy reading.
May 12, 2018 5:22PM PDT

The forum is currently eating Speccy reports. Will alert our host about this.

The Speccy is at the usual URL ending in imtk1S1vxihlJxLRj0juAkF

1. The HDD is a Seagate with very high values in 01 and 07 as suspected.
This will cause nearly unexplainable pauses, hangs and even BSODs.

Some folk new to this issue will move it to a slave drive and will see the same issues continue. This drive can't be attached to any PC without causing troubles. I can't make this clear enough to some.
That is, it's a well known cause yet folk often want to debate this.

2. Java is out of date. From this point on the reading will note anything I would take care of on my machine. Given item 1, that's the cause from my prior findings and the items from here on out are just me reading the rest of the report.

3. "NiceHash Miner Legacy is making Windows laggy"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of your complaints. DOCUMENTED!
https://github.com/NiceHash/NiceHashMinerLegacy/wiki/Troubleshooting#-nicehash-miner-legacy-is-making-windows-laggy

4. Skype. Few use it. Kill it in startup using any one of the web pages about it. You must be greedy with every part of your machine. Kill this now.

5. The Ryzen is a tad warm. Try it with the case cover off.
63C isn't extreme but is hot. I'd try the cover off test here.

6. DNS. You are using your router for DNS lookups. I find better results with 8.8.8.8 or 4.2.2.1. Use NAMEBENCH to test.

That's it, To me mystery solved.

My stutter problem seems to be fixed
May 14, 2018 8:44AM PDT

Hi, yes it didn't let me post the link and then soon after i wasn't able to post anything at all.(Thank you Lee Koo for unblocking me)

1)I had problem with that HDD for a long time, mostly the GPU driver not loading correctly at startup and it's slow overall. I'm planning on buying an SSD soon.

2)Look like Java is up to date for me when i directly go to the Java website the only version available is the Version: 8.0 Update: 171 17/04/2018 , and i already got it?

3)Ok now the funny part, it look like the last AMD update(18.4.1) isn't working with nicehash right now. I tested it twice(With 2 older version ) and i it's working fine. I'm currently running on the 18.3.3 , and i don't have any issue right now.(i hope that doesn't change).

4)Done

5)Nicehash was running, it's warm i know, i ran out of thermal paste. I bought some thermal paste today and my temps are back to normal. Usually it's between 55-60C(While mining)

6)My current DNS is the fastest.

I hope nothing else is going to go wrong, i'll keep you updated.
Thank you so much for your help.

Item 2.
May 14, 2018 9:08AM PDT

I didn't use any "Is my Java up to date." I look at the version on the report and what is currently being distributed.

But it sounds like progress to me.
