Multiple Hard Drives, Windows 2000 NT, Drives Acting Up

Mar 20, 2007 1:23PM PDT

Ok, I tried looking for something out there that could help, to no avail.

So here it is:

At work I have a Windows 2000 NT computer. I have two external hard drives attached to it - both WD. I just got a LaCie (sp?) external. I had to reformat from FAT32 to NTFS....

Basically, the computer reads the drive when I plug it in, but in turn the computer no longer properly reads the other two externals - suddenly I can access the files and sometimes I can see the folders.

When I unplug the new drive (500mb, and the others are 250 and 320 respectively), the other drives become readable again.

So - how can I get all three to run and be usable at the same time????

Some have reported that...

It's drive letter issues.

Others report adding an USB 2.0 Hub helps.

At least it's a work machine and you can get your IT staff on it.

Yes, but....

If your IT staff can't figure it out, then you're stuck trying to figure it out yourself.

I did the drive letter thing - I've actually gone in and assigned the drive letters to each one - so they've been assigned "E", "F" and "I"... and once that one connects ("I") it disables the other two.

Then the other item.

It does consternate some but it does work. It has to do with USB 2.0 clock jitter. I decline to detail more about that but will share the solutions I know of.

Too bad your IT staff is stumped. Do they get a pink slip?

It would be...

nice but.. no pink slip. We outsource our IT now so it's not internal folks Sad

But any advice/help/guidance would be appreciated. I'm just trying to move my stuff onto the new drive.

Have you tried this?

All USB 2.0 so I'll stop writing 2.0...

USB port -> USB hub -> USB drive.

Since you have a few drives, try a few combos. Also there was an USB case which had an improper PID and you can imagine the woes that caused. We had to use Linux and it's USB tools to sniff that out and what a pile of time all over a 20 buck case. At least we nailed it. Armed with that we showed it working in a new USB case.

Wouldn't you know it that the owner was back next week asking us why the drive wouldn't work in the crappy case we had declared buggy?

Yet again. And they thought they had an instant fix. They didn't. They say that Windows 2000 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4 can only take having a maximum of 1tb connected at a time (cumalatively). Do you know if that's true or not? His fix was to turn one off while I transferred data from the others - but that doesn't ultimately solve my issue of having them all connected at the same time. Even two connected (as he suggested) isn't working.

Sorry, I've only done 3x 300GB.

But there is a difference. I know my hardware and don't have the clock jitter issue. Also no duplicate cases so I won't run in the Vendor ID issue.

Since you didn't answer my question I'll wait till you reply on that.

<SIGH>

Turns out that our company uses a customized Windows 200NT SP4 operating system and it may be causing the problem.

LaCie says it should work just fine, so the only possible issue may be how the company configures the system.

IT's solution is for me to use one at a time (a pain since one is linked to my email folders and I have to shut down that and Outlook to use the other), and wait for my XP upgrade (which is in a week or two).

Grrrr.....
