Question

MULTI REGION BLU-RAY PLAYERS

May 2, 2016 3:56PM PDT

HELLO, I LIVE IN MEXICO CITY,MEXICO,AND I HAVE A FEW BLU-RAYS FROM REGION B2 ,FROM LONDON. HERE THEY CLAIM THAT I CAN BUY UPGRADED PLAYERS THAT WILL PLAY ALL BLU-RAY REGIONS. I IMAGINE THESE ARE NOT SANCTIONED BY SAY SONY OR SAMSUNG OR PANASONIC? OR CAN I TRUST THE SELLERS AND REALLY HAVE A REGION FREE PALYER. DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS? AND DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS OR RECOMENDATIONS? GHANK YOU, ALLAN ROTHMAN

This is not called Multi-Region here but region free. I believe Mexico bans such players so you don't find them in most retail stores. As such you'll have to deal with off beat channels.

You can buy them in Chicago and London, but at a premium. They often arrive with free lifetime firmware upgrades. Does this mean that you might still nonetheless find a blu ray disc that won't play? Yes, that's true too.

I don't get to London as much anymore, but in Chi-town you can try either World Import or 220v online. See here:

Enjoy

Major retailers due to the laws here. Yes, the US has spotty enforcement on this one.

Do we really want to open this kettle of bad fish?

We know there are such out there but for average Joe/Jane consumer are they ready for this?

Really, live a little Wink

I have been sourcing these players for family/friends for years. People who could care less about how the whole region thing works- they just want a device that works(!) Sure, they aren't sold in best buy and don't have the 'standard' factory support, but they work just fine if you know your source is providing something of good quality. It would be different if I were sending the OP to Craigslist/Ebay or a guy in a white van in Mexico City Wink This particular store (world imports) is very well know around here at least. It's not 'pirated' equipment per se.

Haven't we gone over this topic before, you & I?

It won't matter soon anyway.

The trade rag I get about DVD media is that it's not doing well in the market as Netflix and such are taking its place.

RCE alone caused some issues with your models. My question about if they are ready for this is about that bump in the road.

ROTFL, yes it will still matter

You forget about all the trillions of various physical DVD media currently already owned by individuals globally, and the fact that most of that content will never be online in any form commercially. So there's that small hiccup Wink

Please don't reply to me like I am the OP asking the question. My answer is 110% valid. If he wants to view those UK movies, he needs to source the correct player, and it's easy as pie. We went over RCE together in a previous thread and you seemed to still want to gravitate toward older players when currently it's no longer an issue.

cheers

It's an awful story.

The beast that is this industry is changing and they don't care if you have DVD media you want to play. You can reach back in time to other media changes and see that once it starts falling out of mainstream it doesn't seem to stop. DVD has years to go but I'm seeing the beginning of the trend.

Lesson? Get your player now, take care of it and have fun with it.

For me I just fired up my DVD player last weekend because I wanted to just play instead of adding the discs to my NAS. What a mistake. I had forgot how sluggish DVD players were compared to the new system.

Maybe we should reveal or broach how to move our DVDs to full digital playback, NAS and such?
