MSWord files converted to "exec" files

by redact--2008 / August 12, 2010 12:57 AM PDT

I am running OS 10.5.8 on an iMac.

A number of my older files, as far as I can tell so far all written in M. S. Word, have been converted into a strange file type which I cannot open, although the finder identifies them as being in the Word format. I have tried several ways of opening the files but at best can produce only garbage. The file icon looks like a darkened screen with the label ?exec? in the upper left-hand corner.

I would like to know how to stop this involuntary conversion of readable into non--readable files. I would also like to be able to convert those ?exec? files back into their original format.

what is the suffix of the files after the dot?
by macnerd10 / August 24, 2010 7:45 AM PDT

if it is not doc (xxx.doc), you can manually put the suffix in the file name and confirm it when the dialog box appears. If this does not work, these files may be (a) corrupted or (b) not really Word files. Make sure that you have Word installed. If not, these files may be showing the executable generic icon.
