Tony, your request needs clarification...

First need to know if you are asking for information about "instant" messaging.

Second, there are two Instant Messengers the first is Windows Messenger that came with Win XP and the other is MSN Messenger that can be downloaded from Microsoft.

Third, XP also came with Messenger Service which is a whole other story and generally is considered undesirable and should be disabled.

Your question asked about MSN Messenger... if that is your problem and is instant messaging software, simply uninstall it through add/remove in the control panel. Windows Messenger (instant messaging) is a little more involved. Sorry for the round about but it just not clear what you have and want to do.

The link from B. Proffitt's reply give you some ways to remove or disable Windows Messenger (instant messenger). I have another way that was easier and worked for me. So in addition to his reference here is my solution:

In windows Explorer got to Program Files>messenger and rename ''messenger'' to something else. In my case it was renamed to ''messenger {disabled}''. Windows upon starting will be unable to find it with the new name; therefore, will not start. If you ever want it enabled again all you need do is reverse the process to its original name of ''messenger''. Worked for me! Although the referenced link may be the more appropriate way some of those instructions were confusing to me.

One bit of caution... be careful about removing Windows Messenger completely as it is tied to some other things such as Outlook Express and may cause them to function improperly... this is only if you completely remove it.

Best of luck!

Windows does not let me rename messenger, claiming it is being used by another person or program. Need to get rid of this pesky program!!

Never had this problem...

Try exiting messenger first then see if it will rename it. If that doesn't work I have no solution... mine is presently renamed without the issue you experience.
