MSN Instant Msgr - How to make it go away?

Mar 6, 2004 4:25AM PST

Recently purchased new computer with W XP Home SP 1
Every time I turn on computer MSN Instant Messenger wants me to log on. I don?t even use this. I close it out and it sits in the system tray. In system tray I have to select exit, but it sits there with the little red circle around it & tells me it can?t because it may be in use by other programs.
How can I make this stop coming up for a login and also get it permanently out of my system tray?
Thanks for help - Denise

Download "Shoot The Messenger"

This is a tiny 22 kb file which allows you to turn Messenger off and on with one click of the mouse.

Not the same "Messenger"... ;)

Ernie,
Windows Instant Messenger is not the same as Windows Messenger Service. I believe the request is to remove Instant Messenger. "Shoot the Messenger" will not do that but will disable Messenger Service which is a good thing to do.

Just want to clarify this confusing issue.

Right you are, Glen. My mistake. I guess it's because I've never had a problem with instant messenger, because I never use it.

I found this using a google search:

Use a text editor to open C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf and change
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 to
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

After you remove the word hide, close the text editor. I used notepad when I did it. Go to the control panel, add/remove programs then windows components. Scroll to the end of the list. You should now have the option to remove or uninstall both forms of messenger. Gail
