Donna, I have Sun Java. Can I download this MS removal tool without any problems? Is there some benefit to removing MSJVM?

Hi,

Can I download this MS removal tool without any problems?
I didn't download or use it because I still want MSJVM here. It is still supported until Sept. 30, 2004. Maybe before SEpt. 30, 2004, I'll remove MSJVM. Or maybe I'll keep it and just switch between Suns' Java or MS JVM Wink

I've read post by some users who seen problem in using the above-mentioned tool: See Google Search result

You might want to manually remove it if you want to remove MSJVM now:

Start/Run/Type RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall
The un-install process begins. Click Yes to confirm.
Reboot when prompted.
After the machine restarts, delete the following items:
the \%systemroot%\java folder
the file java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder
the two files jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder
the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey
the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options)

Is there some benefit to removing MSJVM?
Users system that are not patched are vulnerable with MSJVM exploits:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-011.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms00-075.asp

but if your system is patched and IE security zones settings are locked down, we are still safe to use MS JVM until Sept. 30, 2004 since MS published in their site - they are still offering updates but only until Sept. 30, 2004.

Benefits: Soon it's going to be an outdated software so the benefit in removing it is users will be using a new and supported Java by Sun.
