msiexec.exe

May 19, 2005 9:06AM PDT

Running XP on Athlon 64 3200. Having problem with spontaneous reboots. Task Manager shows CPU usage very high (bounces between 20 and 100%). Processes show the offender to be msiexec. If I end this process, it just shows back up immediately. Was not able to delete from system 32 folder and install a new copy because message says it's in use (which it is because I can't end the process). Help, please. Thought it may be a virus, but a deep scan doesn't indicate so. I do run a firewall and continuous virus scans. Have also scanned for adware. Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for your response. Coincidentally, I received the automatic download of 3.1 as I was reading your response. After installation and reboot, the problem persists. Am working my way through the Knowledge Base, but nothing seems to apply to my specific problem. Am thinking of reformatting and re-installation of XP. Any other ideas?

Power Supply
May 20, 2005 11:40AM PDT

Sudden reboot problems are usually the result of an inadequate power supply. AMD chips are great, have one myself, but they can be murder on power supplies. And the key to buying power supplies, isn't just to get the "biggest" one you can find, but rather one that will actuall deliver power around the capacity it claims on the box (since the number on the box is just how much power it uses).

It's pretty hard to go wrong with an Antec power supply, though it's not the only one out there. AMD's website has a list of "recommended" power supplies for different CPUs. Pick something off of that list, and my guess would be your problems go away.

Am not discounting a power supply problem, but it's a 420W name brand less than a year old. My concern is that msiexec is taking up to 100% of CPU usage in Task Manager, even though I can find nothing trying to install. I can not end msie through task manager. It keeps returning immediately. Suspect some kind of virus. Can someone lead me through removal through regedit. I'm not too familiar with the specific procedure or location of the key. Thanks!
