msdhmd.dll problem-"CRC Error"; C:\>REM {Header} error

Win98; 128ram; not connected to internet (used for data recording only).
I was told to fix it by deleting "msdhmd.dll", but booting up to safe mode and attempting to find it by searching for C:\Windows\system32, I get the error message = "data error reading drive C".

I was told to fix it
To fix what, and who told you? Why don't you ask him?

msdhmd.dll
Read through http://www.google.com/search?&q=msdhmd.dll
I happen to see a lot of references to CRC-errors. I doubt if deleting the file is the best solution to fix anything.

C:\>REM {Header} error
Tell more. Not a single clue in your post.

data error reading drive C
Run a full scandisk (including surface check) of the hard disk. Might take a few hours. And remember: hard disks with errors should be thrown away/replaced as soon as possible.

Hope this helps.

Gklein,

Boot from your Windows 98 boot diskette (if you can't find it, download a program to make one from www.bootdisk.com) and run the DOS-version of scandisk for your hard disk, which is:
scandisk c:
followed by enter.
Do choose to include a surface check.

I'm expecting a lot of fatal errors. Hope you have a backup of your data on the hard disk, just in case it's damaged beyond repair (as it looks like).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for helping Kees.
I bootup with Win98 boot disk, get the "A" prompt and type in "scandisk c:" - -
than I get error message = "C:\>REM {Header}- data error reading drive C".

REM {header} ...

Gklein,

A most curious message, if you cite it correctly.
Looks like something (just a line of comment, nothing serious at all) in your autoexec.bat on the c:\drive, but that shouldn't be executed if you run scandisk from the a:-prompt. That's why it's still more mysterious then the story in http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/160820.html

Better find somebody with a working knowledge of MS-DOS (any tech who was already tech 10 years ago would do) and have him look at your machine. After this mystery is sorted out, concentrate on your other problems.
That's the best I have to offer you now.

Kees
