msconfig and sysedit questions

Feb 21, 2004 2:48AM PST

When I run msconfig, under the startup tab there are about 34 items. 12 items in the list I have deleted from my computer. Those 12 items have an empty box (no check mark) in front of them. Is there any way to erase those items from the list or does it not slow up my computer and not matter if they are there even those items have been removed from my computer?

Also when I run sysedit, under the system.ini category under [Password Lists] if find old password users (.pwl users) that are no longer using my computer. Can I just delete those users in the list without harming anything?

Thanks in advance for any help.

"Is there any way to erase those items from the list"

Look at the answer to http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6142-0.html?forumID=5&threadID=12753&start=0

"or does it not slow up my computer and not matter if they are there even those items have been removed from my computer?"

I can't tell the difference. Used a stop watch even. You can test this as you work the issue.

"Also when I run sysedit, under the system.ini category under [Password Lists] if find old password users (.pwl users) that are no longer using my computer. Can I just delete those users in the list without harming anything?"

As a security measure, I make it a point to KNOW that .PWL file and if I don't need it, it's history.

You can delete all the pwl lists without creating any major problems. If you delete any .pwl list by accident that you still use, your pc will only request you password and ask you if you want to save it, thus, creating a new .pwl list.

I also have a win98se pc, did you ever receive an answer regarding the msconfig part of your question?

Bah~ I usually just use regedit from the Run command off of the Start menu.

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\

then Run, Run- , RunServices, etc.

You will note, under Run, there are all the items that were check marked in MSCONFIG - big deal FM, yeah? lol

If you get extra run= check boxes in MSCONFIG and they don't seem to appear in the registery then-

Look in Win.ini file within MSCONFIG and remove extra entries.
