.msc files

The oddest thing just happened, I was going to run defrag when I got an "Access denied" message. I found that I could open defrag just fine if I first ran mmc and opened it from there, then I went to file types under folder options and .msc files were set up as they should be(opened by mmc), I then went ahead and manually set it to mmc just to see if that would make a difference and oddly enough it did, it now works again. Is this a symptom of some known virus? I've never seen anything like this happen before, I ran McAfee afterwards and found nothing, but this has me kinda nervous. Any thoughts?
