MS Word 2007 does not invoke insert, bold, etc.

I have just recently started using MS Word 2007 on my new computer with Windows Vista. While creating a document I am not able change form insert to type over and I just recently was not able to highlight a word and change to bold--also tryied changing to bold and then type the word.

Any ideas as to what I might do? Thanks, Dewey
