Resolved Question

MS Updates MS13-063 (KB2859537)

Aug 18, 2013 4:17PM PDT

Subject Update, although listed on my Windows Updates, is the only one among 11 that is not Selected. Is this an "iffy" Update? I see some search reports complaining that it is problematic on Windows 7. Anyone have problems with it?

My thanks......Miki

No problems on my Win 7 Home Premium.

It was part of a multiple Windows Updates on Aug 15 on this machine and they all installed OK.

The update was pre-selected on my system when I checked through the updates prior to download and install, so I am unsure why yours was not selected.

More information on this particular update here;
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms13-063

Good luck.

Hi Miki..

This is the first I've heard of an update not being 'selected'. I can only tell you what I know thus far....

According to a notification I received on August 14th, Microsoft released a revision of Bulletin MS13-063.

The reason given: "Updated the Known Issues entry in the Knowledge Base Article section from "None" to "Yes".

Known Issue ([url-https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2859537]Knowledge Base Article) entry now reads:

'Some users may experience issues with certain programs after they install security update 2859537. In some cases the programs may not successfully start. We are also aware of limited reports that certain users may encounter difficulties restarting their computers after applying this security update. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available'

It may be premature to point this out, as it doesn't seem to be a wide spread issue. Please read KB2859537 BSOD at the Microsoft Community Windows Update forum, paying special attention to everything Susan Bradley writes.

I don't feel comfortable advising you what to do. But I do have faith in Susan Bradley's advice. She suggests delaying kernel updates, as 'they're known to cause problems with security applications and other software'. Please keep in mind, this is one person's opinion. Chances are you won't have a problem. Having said that, I also see no harm in waiting a day or two. The choice is yours to make.

I have no doubt, you will want to wait to see what Grif has to report.

Best of luck..

I am aware of the problem/problems associated with KB2859537 which is why I branded it "iffy". I appreciate the Susan Bradley source you recommended and will wait to install. This is not the first time I have received a list of recommended Important Updates wherein one was not Selected.

If you run the kb thru google some folks are having a problem.

I......like Mark.....had the kb pre-checked when msft offered the updates.

It's installed on this w7 machine and I'm not having a problem.

MS13-063 (KB2859537) -- I will wait for it to be "unthrottled".....miki

They are 'throttling" the update as they typically do when they see issues with an update. For those that have installed it and see no issues (as I have here personally) there is no need to uninstall the update. For those that see it unchecked, leave it be and it will be 'unthrottled' at a later time.
