MS update service

Oct 27, 2008 2:37AM PDT

The recent "remote virus" is that effecting the MS update service? Is it too busy or clogged with requests. I can't get pass the "having a problem" message. My system so far doesn't display an error of the trojan/virus but is MS having an issue? TIA -----Willy Happy

Hardly ever get through
Oct 28, 2008 9:31PM PDT

I've tried to get "auto updates" and it seems to fail. The error I get as posted by MS is:
[Error number: 0x8024402C]

I followed through and tried to manually get the patch, but it seems busy. I'm now trying when on hrs. that may allow some better response. I don't know if I got hit, but these MS responses seem make it like I did. I'll get back when I can. -----Willy Happy

Finding a solution for the 0x8024402c error
Oct 29, 2008 2:57AM PDT

Willy,

have a look IF this will help:

This is a fairly common Windows Update error and hopefully this article will help you resolve the problems you are having.

The 0x8024402C error code typically occurs because an incorrect character exists in the proxy override settings.

But there are some other reason and these are listed below.

Finally
Oct 30, 2008 1:38AM PDT

I followed MS own error link and fixes yet still no workee. I was though unable to work ZA free to accept any address that MS provided so they could get by. I just wasn't able to do that, it was mystery to me. Finally, I simply turned off ZA free and the update was able to continue on and not get the error. I can only assume the firewall was blocking or similar. I had over 39mb of updates even though I had the "auto update" turned on, it never displayed(shield), huummmm, so I finally did get them all via dial-up. The auto update is displaying again and seems to work, but these huge updates are defeated by system activity and/or appear to return once idle or less than active period. While, I could have done some more direct manual d/l's, I had no clue what they may have been as this was capable to do, just the MS update service wasn't getting past to display what they may have been, for KBxxxxx update.

Yeaaaa! I got them all for now, until next time.

Ahh...No Mention Of ZoneAlarm Previously...
Oct 30, 2008 3:05AM PDT

..in your posts.. ZoneAlarm is a common issue, especially for those with Vista.. Are you running Vista? Although ZA works OK for most on XP, the Vista version is causing headaches for many..

Hope this helps.

XP, no Vista
Oct 30, 2008 4:44AM PDT

ZA has never been an issue before so it wasn't expected. Though, I don't see why it did what it did, I was able to get around it. I do use XP and as stated did all MS supplied expect for the URLs that were required to allow it to get pass the firewall. That's when I finally shutdown ZA and the response was valid and continued. I will get over to the ZA forums and see what they have to say.

I do run Vista for another system but it shows no glitches under the same ZA. Thanks -----Willy Happy

Although Strange, I Can Frequently Fix It By...

...simply restarting the computer, then immediately visiting the Windows Update site afterwards.

Make sure you have the most recent Java installed also..

Hope this helps.
