MS Plays for Sure = No OS X

Feb 9, 2006 4:00AM PST

I recently purchased an iRiver T30 thinking "It's a USB mp3 player. So I'll just plug it into my mac and OS X will see it as a mass storage device."

Survey says: XXX

Apparently something in the players firmware that makes it plays for sure compatible makes it unusable as a USB Mass storage device.

Is that essentially correct?

And if it is; who's the brainiac who thought of that?

Grrrrrrrrrrrr

Probably Apple

Some MP3 players are mass storage compliant and will work fine on anything. My Creative MuVo is, it shows up as a 1GB drive. However, the SanDisk Sensa that I bought my mother does not; it shows as an MP3 player.

You are going to have to use the software that came with the T30 to transfer your songs, etc. And don't get all hissy about it; Apple is the same with iTunes and the iPod. You can't use anything else (legally, at least) to get stuff on and off it.

i don't mind not using itunes.

Actually, my aim is to record live events at church using the mp3 recorder and transfer them onto my mac and PC. The problem is that My mac won't recognize the T30 at all. And there's no workaround.

I could care less about integration with itunes or any other software. Just let the darn thing show up in the Finder or Explorer!!!

Geez, so iRiver just lost my business for no better reasion than to get in bed with microsoft in order to compete for the 25% market share that ITMS doesn't own.

I'll go with another brand that actually thinks that there is benefit to cross platform compatibility.

Not a Genius..

If your laptop has a line in port, could you simply hook the computer up to your church's mixer (assuming they have one) and pull in the audio that way? Unless of course you're just a member and they don't want you around the mixer, etc.

Like I said...I'm not a genius and that may totally be a crazy idea. If so, ignore me, lol.

Assuming...

Thats also assuming you have a laptop. Sorry for the assumptions.

That's the end goal :)

But we're not there yet. It's going to take a major retrofit of the entire sound booth area to make room for a computer to record to.

Not to mention the fact that the sound guys are volunteers and only really know to pull the faders down if something starts feeding back.

My mp3 recorder idea is just an interim thing.

Thanks for the feedback though!!!

Cheap Laptop
Feb 9, 2006 6:12AM PST

If you could find an old machine to use, you could record the audio onto that. My laptop only has 32 MB of RAM and a 200MHz processor and I use it to record an hour's worth of audio sometimes. It does take a bit longer to export the MP3, but not an un-bearable amount of time (as long as I'm not sitting at the thing).

Once you do make room for a computer, maybe someone could donate a computer and you wouldn't have to give up yours or transport yours back and forth.

Anyways, just a thought. Good luck.

iRiver

That's too bad... and strangely enough, I own an older iRiver H120 that is not "plays for sure" compatible, and, guess what - works fine on my iMac using OS X.

Looks like iRiver abandoned universal compatibility for the endorsement from Windows. Can't hardly blame them, everyone's trying to chip away at the iPod's market share, and "plays for sure" is a great way to distinguish your device these days.

Good luck with your project. Hopefully you can return your new iRiver and find something that works for you.

Funny you mention it

I went back to return the T30 and look for an alternative.

Every single mp3 player in the rack had the PlaysForSure logo on it. So much for distinguishing their product.
