Resolved Question

MS Office replacement

May 8, 2013 12:18AM PDT

Good morning,

I want to get rid of the last vestiges of microsoft. I have macbook OS x 10.6.8 and am using MS Office 2011. I had a devil of a time w/the last Outlook update and getting my data back. Now that I have it straightened out, I want to replace it.

Is there a comparable Office Suite for Mac? I need something made by Apple so I won't ever have that nightmare again. I also need it to be able to transfer all my MS Office data so I don't lose anything.

Is such a program available?

If I ever have another lapse in judgement and mention getting a MS program, just shoot me.

Thanks for all your help.

Rita

Sorry but in no I mean no.

There are folk that want every scrap of data moved over. Such as the recently opened files list or the calendar in Outlook.

There will be something lost. Documents and actually email should be fine. But "everything"? Sorry, but no.

Why Thunderbird? It is okay, but it is no longer being developed.

RE: MS Office replacement (iWork)
May 10, 2013 11:58AM PDT

Apple makes the iWork suite ( www.apple.com/iwork )
- Pages is the word processor/layout.
- Numbers is the spreadsheet.
- Keynote is the slideshow.

Also, you already have free, built-in Personal Information applications on your Mac:
- Apple Mail for email.
- iCal for calendaring/reminders.
- Address Book for contacts.

Additionally, there's Neo Office for Mac OS X ( www.neooffice.org ), made ny a third party.

Now, understand, taht while these suties may be able to import/open your former Microsft Office documents, they may get translated for further editing natively in those applications. And any saves you do would best be done in those native formats.

Export/Import

Hello.
If you do not mind spending a few dollars to make your switch, you can use emailchemy to move all of your email from Outlook to Apple Mail. You can find emailchemy here: http://www.weirdkid.com/products/emailchemy/ . Your Outlook Contacts can be exported as a CSV file and imported into your Mac Address Book. Export instructions are here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/export-contacts-HA101870639.aspx . Then, open Address Book, go to File and Import. Try this page for exporting your Outlook calendar: https://techarticles.uark.edu/calendar/export_and_import_outlook_calendars/ .

Apple's iWork suite can output files in MS Office formats. The most sophisticated effects, transitions, graphics, etc. may not fully transfer, though.
