MS Office Problem

Jul 12, 2005 8:22PM PDT

Op Sys = Win XP Home + SP2.MS Office XP
Problem = Have network of 4 workstations + Main.On MAIN is an Excell File contained in a Shared Folder which is Mapped ''P''.All workstations except 1 can open the Shared Folder from a Desktop Shortcut. The Excel File is shown with the standard Ecel Icon. When the Excel File Icon is clicked the file opens in Excel correctly. On the other machine the shortcut opens the Shared Folder OK, but the File Icon is the Windows Logo, not the Excel File Icon and the file will not open in Excel. If I try to open Excel, a message pad comes up asking for the Office XP CD to be inserted.MS Office has no Icon in Add/Remove and it wont uninstall.Wants the CD again. What is your advice for correction.Apart from this all else seems fine.

Thanks for reply.
When you try to open Excel, the Popup Message indicates what you are trying to open is on the Office XP with Frontpage CD.
By inserting the Office XP with Frontpage CD and clicking OK on the Popup Message another Popup Message comes up after the CD has been searched stating a path could not be found to the source.
Regardless of these messages, after clicking Cancel on the Popup Message, Excel will open as normal.
To me it sounds like an incomplete installation by removing CD before the Restart after the original installation. I have difficulty in understanding why MS Office and also Nero Burning Rom have no Icons on the Add/Remove pane and both cannot be removed.

Wipe Office from that machine and reinstall.

While I have in the past dived into the registry to tweak the install path for Office, today I just wipe it out and reinstall since it takes about as long.

Thanks Bob for your advise.
As I said in my original message, MS Office will not uninstall from Add/Remove.

Not sure if this will help - pcmag article
Jul 17, 2005 3:58PM PDT

Thanks Jerry S for this advice. I understand what this article is about and if I get the chance I will try it out. MS Office does in fact show on the Add/Remove Applet, but without its MS Office Icon. In place of the Icon is a x. So I am not sure if this is quite the same as what is contained in the pcmag.
The owner of this network has decided to do a "Clean" ReInstall, due to other problems that also exist.

My thanks to everybody who has tried to assist in this matter

Other problems?
Jul 17, 2005 10:29PM PDT

There's a clue I don't recall being supplied.

One of the things about MS and other software is they expect a stock, clean machine or issues begin. Something was amiss but the other problems were not noted so these were not discussed.

-> Next time, tell a bigger story so you can get the best help.

Thanks Bob. You are right, it is most likely some of the other problems on this machine have had an undesireable effect on the MS Office installation.
Some times it is not easy to look outside the square.

Yes, Excell is installed on all machines. Excel on this machine functions OK, other than for the problem indicated. I can open a path to \\MAIN\Shared Folder\File and it will open Ok but will not open from Desktop Shortcut as previously explained. Thanks for reply.

Path
Jul 13, 2005 6:07PM PDT

What if you enter (type it in manually or cut-n-paste) this path in the properties of the desktop shortcut?

Sorry, I may not have made this clear. The target path to the shared folder on MAIN is correct. In fact the shortcut finds the MAIN shared folder which contains the file which will not open. This file does not show the normal Excel "X" icon, it shows a Windows Logo instead. The properties of the file declares it as being an Excel worksheet. I cannot understand why, on this machine only, the file is not displayed as an Excel "X" Icon.

Thank You

I understand now, but I'm going to bow out & let Bob help

now since I'm at a loss for a quick & easy solution.

I wish it was quick and easy.

Most contributors help us have choices as to what fix we want to try. I note what I do, but not everyone will want to wipe Office and reinstall. It's just my choice since I can give direction to "Tech" and it gets done. If that fails then I can dig deeper into the issue, but I always try the usual cure first.

Quick & Easy can be subjective, too.

I've been lurking around the forums for about a month but just recently started offering advice. What might be quick & easy to you is slightly above my comfort level but way over the head of someone else. And that's one of the good things about these forums. Anyone can ask a question and hopefully someone will be willing and/or knowledgable enough to offer advice.
