MS office freezes when editing photos

Jul 7, 2009 6:02AM PDT

I have microsoft office 2007 (home and student) and every time i try editing a photo ( under Picture tools: Format: Picture styles) MS office freezes and stops responding. Does any one know what causes this and what to do?

Thanks!

Next up. Word safe mode.
Jul 7, 2009 1:57PM PDT

Let's see if it's an add-in (Norton, other.)

Click start, run then WORD /A

that doesnt work...maybe i did it wrong?
Jul 7, 2009 9:50PM PDT

it says -- Windows cannot find "word"
I typed it as - WORD, space, forward slash, A (WORD /A)

My bad.
Jul 8, 2009 12:32AM PDT

It's actually winword.exe so next time google WORD SAFE MODE or just try

winword /a

in safe mode it works

Disable all addons. Then see if it works.
Jul 8, 2009 6:07AM PDT

If so, gradually enable then one by one and see when it stops working. That should be the offender.

not working
Jul 8, 2009 6:38AM PDT

Theres only 2 active add-ins:

MS office live add in - i try turning it off but i get this message:
"this add-in is installed for all users on this computer, and can only be connected and disconnected by an administrator (and i was on the administrator account then)"

2nd add in was: Person name (outlook email receipts)- and i dont think this was causing it

- Collapse -
You found it.

but the problem is....
Jul 8, 2009 7:08AM PDT

I cant! look at my previous post- i wrote what the error message was

- Collapse -
Then uninstall Live?
Jul 8, 2009 7:15AM PDT
- Collapse -
actually its good now
Jul 8, 2009 7:27AM PDT

it now works when i just have a picture on the page with some text. But when i try editing a photo on a fyer i am making (a pretty big one) - thats when it stops working. (But before, even when i tried editing a photo on a page with a little text it didnt work). So perhaps this is the problem?

- Collapse -
It the problem changes
Jul 8, 2009 7:33AM PDT

Then we start over.

But since safe mode works, we uninstall plugins.

- Collapse -
ok, i uninstalled Windows live add-in
Jul 8, 2009 8:08AM PDT

but it still freezes. Any other ideas?

- Collapse -
So no plugins?
Jul 9, 2009 3:55AM PDT

Sorry but it's all in the details.

1. No plugins?
2. Safe Mode results?

"Person Name (outlook email receipt)" and the type is "smart tag"

Thanks!

"even in safe mode it freezes"

That's a new development and points to other issues.

We can likely dismiss this being a Word addin issue now.

Go to your first post and complete your post with a reply to your top post and tell all such as machine age, make, model, if the OS was reloaded, what software is running at the time (Norton, Spybot, Adaware, CA Antivirus, Zone Alarm and such.)

There is also issues about drivers for video, printers and more.

And finally, have the TASK MANAGER running and don't let it hide. In the toolbar set it to not hide and then see if the CPU is maxed out. Sometimes it takes Word some minutes to get done with it's bit twiddling. In fact that leads me to an idea.

Since we can turn that off and on, and you are having issues, try it off and watch the CPU meter.

CPU usage not too bad

about my computer
Jul 10, 2009 2:02AM PDT

Gateway ML6703 about 3 years old running vista home premium. I have Norton IS 2009. Again, I have MS office Home and studnet 2007. I did reinstall windows about 1 or 1 1/2 years ago.

- Collapse -
i dont think this is neccesary
Jul 10, 2009 2:04AM PDT

but i also sometimes run spybot scans (though i never used the immunization part) and ccleaner scans

- Collapse -
AHA.
Jul 10, 2009 2:38AM PDT

Spybot is now a known issue when combined with other software titles. Uninstall that and Adaware please.

In fact, Norton plus Spybot has been found to be a toxic combo.

While this may not be "it" it is an issue worth taking care of.

i dont have adaware (anymore)
Jul 10, 2009 5:26AM PDT

i had adaware a while ago but got rid of it. But also, just using spybot for scans (not for any other feature)will mess up norton? and if so, do you think my norton scans are as good as spybots for spyware adn stuff?

Thanks for letting me know!

Grif tells us "the new stuff."
Jul 10, 2009 6:30AM PDT

Read Grif's advice at http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6122_102-0.html?threadID=328220#2968150

I agree. Those are the new great free titles that don't have the toxic combo effects. Spybot's Teatimer is resident, scanning, so is Norton, etc. There are more combo's like that so we always work that issue out of the picture.

Sorry, I'm the last person to write nice about Norton. They lost me years ago. I'm sure they are doing better but twice burned (and not by a pest that got by!)

back to the MS office problem

Any idea what is causing it?

Also, How do you feel about Kaspersky instead?

Thanks!

The cause will be found

When its fixed. We are slowly working the issues with some detours as tests such as safe mode look to be working but later you tell it didn't fix it. So we explore each of the usuals in order and then when all is exhausted we have to call it a corrupt OS, application or unknown then start over.

The only issue there is here is that what takes minutes in person takes a week here.

Sometimes members want me to vet my answers. Then we get to do that for each step and it extends the time and posts spent. Not that anyone should trust anyone.
