MS Office 2007 Programs & Files Long Load times

Oct 24, 2007 3:25AM PDT

I have a brand new HP and I'm running MS Windows Vista Business & MS Office Small Business 2007. When I try to open any of the office programs it takes anywhere from 10-24 minutes for the program to load. The same applies to just opening files from the program once it is open. I've tried placing the original CD in my machine and running the fix problems portion of the CD and it did nothing for me, I also update my machine daily in hopes of fixing this problem. Does any one have any idea's as to what it wrong with MS Office SB 2007, &/or have any idea how to fix it?

Thanx,

J.M.

Make this a warranty issue.

Both to HP and Microsoft. Ask for fix or refunds all around.

Mind you won't get much sympathy if you have one of those single core CPU laptops with 512MB RAM.

Is this computer on a network?

If so, make sure the network is running properly. If it is not it may be that Office is attempting to interrogate the network but keeps timing out. Eventually it will default to the single computer only and then open.

Do you have any mapped drives on this computer? Start > Help and Support and type in Mapped Drives describes what this is.

Yes it's on a network

Yes, I'm on a network with mapped drives, I think part of the problem is that everything in the office is XP and I'm the only one on the network running Vista. Could that be a factor, and if so any suggestion as to how to fix it?

Have you tried the usual Microsoft fixes?

Yeah I wondered.

Bob's given you a link to a Microsoft article and I reckon that might be the cause. I haven't read Bob's anti-virus link before but that makes sense as well. Office files are carefully protected by AV's and an anti-virus might try to scan the network when Office is opened.

Networks can be a problem when you open an Office application. It scans for the network and keeps trying if it doesn't succeed the first time, eg if the network is busy.

Those mapped drives can also be a problem. Because the mapped drives are elsewhere on the network Office will try to read them as it is opened, or when you goto File > Open.

If the network otherwise runs well I wouldn't have thought yours being Vista would cause the problem. As I understand it network protocols are pretty much standard whether you're using Vista or XP, or a Mac, Linux etc.

How to fix it? If the Microsoft registry fix doesn't work, it means unmapping those drives I fear.
