MS Millenium - Windows Explorer has blank left side panel

Help. My windows explorer used to be fine, but now is displaying no directory information on left side panel. The right side shows contents of folder, but left side panel is grey with only the "X" to close window. I can click on the folders button, but this just maximizes the folder contents area. When I click again I'm back to a two panel display with the left side panel blank. Does anyone know what is wrong?

mslevin6, Mosaic1's instructions at the link below should be of help. She (Mosaic1) is one of the sharpest gurus around. It is good practice to backup the registry prior to editing it.
