MS helpsvc.exe: Any Major Drawbacks to Setting....

by tobeach / June 23, 2007 4:36 PM PDT

it to manual rather than automatic via Admin Tools>Services?
It's a program I never use normally and basically ignore it. Last night I noticed my hard drive light flickering away while playing a long time game. Task Mgr. revealed it running from low of 70,000 up to 116,000 while basically at idle. Thanks for opinions! Happy

Specs in Profile. P4 512/80G/Intel/XPPro. All scans clean.

No problems that I know of. If set to manual then all that happens is that you wait a while longer for Help and Support to load when you need it.

I'm not sure why it would be running when you were playing a game though. That seems a little strange to me.

also. I've never noticed it before.
Upon Googling it, most comments seemed to thing it was a bug endemic to pre-SP2 XPs. Supposedly SP2 fixed but saw lots of SP2 machines posting similar and they seemed to think some MS update re-instituted it.
Have set to manual and after re-boot, all seems well so far. Thanks again for speedy & thoughtful reply! Grin Sandy

In fact I am in error because I mis-read your post.

The fact that you were playing a game whilst the help service was running is probably not relevant. If you had used Help and Support at any time before you played that game, then it might have stayed listed in the Task Manager.

Just one of those "Windows" things, I guess.
