I can only guess you have some PC and Windows and MS-Excel. Does Open Office from open it OK?

Are you doing something odd like Excel 97 on Windows XP?

"Cannot even uninstall MS Office".
What happened if you tried? Error message? Did you try the Office Removal Wizard?

"Had to format the PCs"
- More than one with the same problem?
- After reinstall of Windows and MS Office, did the problem recur?
