MRUN32.INI

May 9, 2004 7:38AM PDT

Ok, I've got serious problems. What ever this file is, it is now missing. Since my cable installer put Spybot on my computer, I'm having problems reaching web pages that I've always gone to. Now my disk defrag and thorough scan disk don't work either. I've cleared out my cache, internet history, shut off my active desktop. I don't know what else to do. The web pages I can't get to say HTTP 500 internal server error. Is the missing file part of the reason? I'm using windows ME and internet explorer 6.0 with the update SP. HELP?

Research the discussions at http://groups.google.com/groups?q=MRUN32.INI but the bottom line is that its very likely some MALWARE which has been removed left a treasure behind.

It will take time for me to read the passages to see if the culprit was noted.

You start reading too.

I've been reading my brains out for the last two months, and have yet to find an answer anywhere. If it's part of the interactive training tool, I know that was installed by Dell when I bought this system. But somehow the cable guy in his thoughtfulness deleted some files with Spybot that have screwed up a lot of programs. I wonder if I were to use system restore prior to his Spybot installation and make him come back to reinstall my roadrunner connection if that would work.

From Dell? That is a partial clue.

Dell has their own support and if it's something just from them, then I won't know about it.

I could use my utilities to remove the rest of it, but it's your choice on the matter.

Fair warning. You'll have to help it install.

I could not find a DELL article on how to reinstall the Step By Step Interactive training. However, GATEWAY has it noted at http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/MICROSOF/7509594/Installs/7509594si5.shtml

YOU will have to navigate to the directory on the CD that DELL provided to run the SETUP.EXE if you want to reinstall this feature.

Let me be clear on this. It's a DELL issue and you should task them to tell or document how to reinstall this item. If they don't document it on their site, then I won't know about it.

In addition, while I think I've found it (MRUN), the GATEWAY note may be just a little off as to where the SETUP.EXE is. I will not be able to tell you exactly where it is, because I don't have your CD and DELL didn't tell. You have to figure the last step out.

In closing, if this was my machine, I'd find the item in MSCONFIG and just eject it. But that's me.

Funny, I searched Dells site and came up empty too. Maybe it's a Dell ploy to make you buy a new computer after 3 or so years. With the help files missing and scan disk & defrag not working, it almost looks like I need to do something.
What I don't get is why some websites that used to work no longer work. www.kohls.com isn't working and a survey that I used to be involved with keeps giving me an apache error. Nothing ever easy.

About the Apache error.
May 9, 2004 9:27PM PDT

I will be clear on that one and state that your machine has ZIP! to do with that error. With the last few years of dotcom shrinking, many sites are failing due to neglect or loss of support staff. This error is not caused by your machine or configuration.

Let me comment about the Dell/MRUN issue. Dell offered phone support and as such, may not have developed a web accessible knowledge base about all their stuff. Your MRUN issue is really not that bad, but I tackled it because it was a challange. MRUN all by itself wasn't enough of a clue, but when you revealed it was a Dell, then I was able to scrape up some clues about the Dell supplied CDs.

In closing, the PARASITE issue has grown to such proportions and is now damaging people's setups. I, for one have no reserve in writing that the damage was not done by a stock settings and use of Spybot, Adaware, Cwshredder or Housecall, but by what traps the pest or parasite put into the machine.

1. Some install entries in the HOSTS file.

You should research what this file is and what it does.

2. Some install what is known as a Layered Service Provider or LSP.

I doubt this is your issue, but do look at LSPFIX on http://www.google.com

3. Read http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ to learn about this new plague.

These are items the Antivirus don't deal with because such are not viral...

Thanks for your help & info Bob. Looks like I have more research to do. I have not found an easy cure like I was hoping for.
I guess mr. cable installer who started this will have to come re-install his initial work because I think I'm going to use the GO BACK/RESTORE utility to a time when none of these problems existed, before cable. Hopefully that will be my easy fix, if not, back to the drawing board.

Scan disk?
May 11, 2004 9:27AM PDT

How can I run scan disk from MSDOS? Can I do defrag from DOS too?
And, how do I get to the prompt when my machine comes on to do these, if at all possible?

thanks again for all your great tips.

Re:Scan disk? (from DOS, Windows ME)
May 11, 2004 12:07PM PDT

It's a fairly long thread, so if I don't remember it's Windows ME, then correct me.

Windows ME has no boot to DOS capability and if you need to run SCANDISK, maybe SAFE MODE is your best effect. The same for Defrag.

But if one types

SCANDISK 10 TIMES into http://www.google.com, the Microsoft article that cures scandisk/defrag restart issues is found.

mdsarlene, You Should Be Able To Run Scandisk From A Prompt...
May 11, 2004 12:59PM PDT

...in Windows ME, like this:

Gain access to a Command Prompt in Windows ME this way: Shut down the puter, place the Windows ME start up disk in the floppy drive, start the machine. When the menu appears choose "Minimum Boot". Press Enter. When the command prompt appears, type "scandisk", then press enter.

You won't be able to run Defrag from the command prompt, but I hope the above instructions get it done for you.
