MPEG VX editability?

Jan 22, 2005 4:45PM PST

Is the MPEG VX format a video file that can actually be edited by a relatively simple movie editing software like windows movie maker?
I would appriciate your answer as I am about to buy a camera and I want to be able to edit the video clips on my computer.

Mpeg VX

VX is a buzzword invented by Sony.
Probably by their marketing department.

Instead of saying VGA for 640x480 (as the rest of the industry does),
Sony chooses to call it VX.

VX = Hype, Puffery, Ennoble, Magnification

I really don't know

Sorry I don't know either. It is simply the format that is advertized as being the new sony digital cameras' video/movie mode format. So I wanted to know if I could edit such on my computer.

.avi is the most common of all the formats.

There are hundreds of .avi editing softwares available.

Sony is just trying to make it sound new.

Burning and Playing Sony MPEG VX fine movies to DVD
Mar 23, 2005 2:00AM PST

I am looking at pruchasing a Sony P200 camera that records VX Fine movies of 640x480 @ 30fps. I know the PRO memory stick is required to do this. I am wanting to be able to burn them to DVD and view on TV. I downloaded a sample AVI (http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/pssd500/mov-e.html) that was reportedly recorded on a Canon SD500 (640x320 @ 30fps). The burned (Nero6) DVD-R looked great played on the TV. As played on PC and TV, it appeared fluid and even zoomed had almost no pixalation.

Should I expect similar good quality results from the Sony when burning to DVD? Or would another Camera (Not video camera) work better for this purpose?

Any recomendation on software, formats or techniques on burning these to DVD for TV play?

Sony Video on DVD
Mar 23, 2005 6:05AM PST

If you had a video clip from the P200 you should be able to experiment.

I have found a video clip from the P150 and would expect it to be the same as from the P200.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/p150_samples.html

Right click on MOV000127.MOV
Select "Save Target As"
Find a place to put it on your hard drive and download.

It is 12 meg and lasts for 9 seconds.

I played the clip with Windows Media Player.
It looked smooth but I did notice a bit of brightness flicker.

MPEG VX

Can't really help , just wanted to say that i have a Sony cyber-shot camera, and I'm having a lot of trouble trying to burn video's so they'll play in DVD player and play on computer. I took the video's down to Walmart, and there photo machine wouldn't do it, Now I'm considering purchasing Roxy video suite 11 , I just bought Nero multimedia suite 10 (haven't opened it) and found out it wont do copy disk to disk unless its a 32 bit system. So now i will have to return it...I have all these video's and haven't been able to take them off the computer.Still haven't found out if Roxy will work with Mpeg VX. If i find out, I'll let you know. If you find out , post it please.
