mpeg reassociation

Here's a simple question, I'm sure. How do I re-associate all mpeg files to windows media player 9? Seems like realone player took over somehow.

If you have XP

you can go to any mpeg file, right click and choose Open With....there should be a flyout menu with choices, so make sure you have a check in the box that says 'always use this program' and then click Media Player. It will default back to that program from now on.

If you have W98/ME you can go to any mpeg file, HIGHLIGHT it but don't open it, hold down the SHIFT key, and then right click it to get the OPEN WITH option (it might be in the center of the menu list rather than at the top), then let go of the shift key and choose OPEN WITH.

Another window pops up, put a check mark in 'always use this program' and scroll to Media Player and click it. That forces the default to that program again.

open up RealOne player, (pesky thing!!), and search it's Options or Preferences for file associations and untick the one which makes RealOne associated itself to mpeg, which it might do everytime it is opened.

You may have to do as Toni says again once you have opened up RealOne player to do this.

Or better yet, destroy any Real Player software on your computer, Happy

(Sorry, only kidding about the destroy part. Well, sort of. You may surmise that I don't like Real software. It is intrusive and attempts to take over your computer, and keeps "phoning home" to Real Networks).

Whenever I go to any site

that requires Real Player or Quick Time, I leave.....I exclusively use Media Player for almost everything. I have a free vcd player that I can highly recommend called QUICK VCDPLAYER that I downloaded from the net, and PowerVCR DVD Deluxe for viewing vcr movies with, and still use Media Player for the DVD player. I don't think I need anything else to mess with my associations. I don't even let winzip get the association for cab files...heheheh

The only programs that really make me nuts are the photo/graphics programs that take over not only the associations by default, but grab and hold onto the freaking icons as well so even if you uninstall the program, the icons are crapped out and don't default back.
