General discussion

MP3 player, iPod

If I never download music from the internet, am I missing anything by never buying an MP3 player or an iPod? Thank you very much. user470

Not necessarily.

I don't have either an iPod or any other MP3 player and I do fine.

But it depends on what you do, or want to do. If you are 'out and about', and want to listen to your own music, then an MP3 player may be the way to go. You can transfer your own mp3's from your computer on to it. You don't need to download files if you have your own music collection.

But I think you can survive wthout them! Happy

Now I can't live without it

I owned a 2nd gen iPod nano for two or three years. I recently dropped it in water and ruined it. I discovered I couldn't live without it. I am trying to decide between the new nano and Touch since it has some PDA features I could use. In the interim, I borrowed my wife's retired nano.

I don't download much music. I've probably bought a handful of songs on iTunes or Amazon. I prefer this to CDs. I rarely enjoy an entire CD so I purchase just the songs I like. I've also downloaded songs from my CD collection -- many times just a few songs from each album.

However, I have discovered that I rarely listen to music. I download podcasts, most of which are free, and have purchased a few audiobooks. I listen to Buzz Out Loud from cnet every day, in fact. There are podcasts on a multitude of subjects. I listen to the podcasts while exercising, driving (hooked into my car radio), and while doing housework.

Audiobooks can be expensive and I reserve them for long drives. They really maintain my sanity.

you aren't

If you don't have the need to listen to music or watch video on the go then don't get one. If you do get one then you'll just be dragged in the vicious cycle of expensive new players coming out to replace the one you just bought. Its pretty crazy, I'm a victim of this cycle with many many dead mp3 players and use 2 newer ones. So avoid at all costs :/
