Don't let iTunes fiddle with your originals. Keep your backups away so if and when you move off itunes, you have your stuff.
For now, just let itunes add your files and start the process of organising.

I have a lot of old files from my college days that were ripped in various formats and have been moved and rearranged over the last 10yrs. I recently used a $20 LAME converter to change them all to mp3, but now I have a bunch of files that are missing tag information, album art, not organized in correct standard folders, etc. I?ve been slowly going through them updating the tags and cleaning up the folders in WMP 10. Recently, I was given an ipod nano and so, must use iTunes.
On to the questions:
1) iTunes seems to suck at file management/updating old files. Am I just too inexperienced with it and need to learn more or what should I use?
2) If, in fact, iTunes isn?t what I need for file updating? when I change file names/locations in WMP (or whatever), how do I get my itunes library to update? I tried one thing an wound up with duplicate listings (not sure what happened there. Don?t drink and itune, kids)
Any related suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Note: I read old posts looking for info first and would like to preemptively say that I?m not interested in piracy; these are mostly old files from CDs that are long lost or scratched beyond recognition (I won't say that I could produce a reciept for every song, it was college). Also, I know lame is free, but the interface was good, did batch conversion, and I think was the best thing for me at the time.
