Mozilla Thunderbird not downloading my emails!

by LuiggiP / June 7, 2012 10:30 PM PDT

Hi all,

I'm new here and would appreciate some help with this - it's driving me nuts!

Yesterday I installed the latest version of Thunderbird, to replace Microsoft Outlook which just started doing it's own thing.

I set up 3 accounts - one secure connection to my university email, and two others - one POP and one IMAP. To begin with all seemed to be working great.. But today I turned on my computer and no emails have been downloaded from the POP or IMAP addresses! here's what I did next:

I checked on the webmail sites directly, and there are messages waiting to be downloaded.

I checked the server settings for both POP and IMAP addresses - both seem correct (i.e. using the correct ports, protocol, passwords etc)

I checked my Avast firewall - it has made the correct port exceptions for my email addresses.

I checked that windows firewall was still disabled.

I 'removed' both the IMAP and POP email accounts, and set them up again.

Still nothing! When I click the 'Get Mail' button on the top left corner of Thunderbird browser, the green bar appears at the bottom of the screen to suggest the program is scanning my accounts - but then nothing happens!

Please help - I can't face going back to Outlook! I want a Macbook!!

I have done some further research, and disabled the mail scanner in Avast Anti-Virus Free edition - in case this was a problem. Still no luck downloading my emails!

This is a bit of a joke... I thought Mozilla software was supposed to be good quality? I may have to revert back Outlook after all Sad

The combination Thunderbird/Avast/pop3 works fine with me. But I realize that doesn't help you.

Ha! No, it doesn't - but I'm glad you've been successful Happy

I've actually solved this problem now, I think. I had to disable SSL/TLS protection within Thunderbird for each of the IMAP and POP3 accounts - including selecting 'transmit password unencrypted'. I then activated Avast mail scanner again, and set it to scan incoming / outgoing messages, making sure that all of the correct ports / accounts were listed under the 'SSL Accounts' tab. As soon as I took these steps, my email arrived en masse!

I'm not quite sure how secure it is to disable the SSL/TLS and password encryption settings in Thunderbird, though???

That's one the settings the mail provider specifies.

So when you wrote in your first post "I checked the server settings for both POP and IMAP addresses - both seem correct", you forgot to add ", but they weren't."

Good to see it works anyway.

The most beautiful phone ever has one wildly annoying issue

The Samsung Galaxy S8's fast speeds and fantastic curved screen make it a top phone for 2017, but the annoying fingerprint reader could sour your experience.
