Mozilla Subird

Hello all fellow computer addicts! I have a quick question: I have been using Mozilla Sunbird as my sole calendar for the last several months. I really like it, although I am worried that if my computer crashed or is stolen, I will lose my whole schedule! Does anyone know if it is possible to back up this application? Thanks ahead of time for your responses!

Bob, thanks for the tip, but unfortunately the Mozilla backup tool only offers backup of Thunderbird and Firefox, but not the Sunbird calendar application. Any other ideas?

Sunbird is a standalone application.

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird.html notes this plus gives us what we need to know.

"What is the file format for Calendar?

Calendar uses the iCal standard for storing its calendar data. The file is located in a Calendar/ subdirectory of your Mozilla profile."

Bingo. You need to backup that file.

Bob, I can't thank you enough for taking the time to try and help me. Please forgive me for my ignorance, but how do I back up that file in my profile? I really love using Firefox and Sunbird is very convenient as well (although I have found several errors), but since I am using Sunbird as my only calendar for my business, I am fearful that I could lose my schedule, and that would'nt be a good thing.

Copy-and-paste...
Oct 4, 2005 6:00AM PDT

In Windows XP, the directory of the file is ''local drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Sunbird\Profiles\XXXXXXX.default\Calendar''. In Windows 95/98/ME the directory is ''local drive:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\Calendar''. Note that the ''XXXXX.default'' is a folder with a random file name that helps suecure your data through its unpredictability. From there you should be able to simply copy-and-paste the file (CalendarDataFile.ics) to your preference of external media (extra hard drive, CD/DVD, flash drive, etc).

Methods of copy-and-pasting:
* Right-click the file, and left-click ''copy.'' Then go to the destination, right-click the white (lank) space, and left-click ''paste.''
* Left-click the file once to select it, then go edit->copy. Go to the destination folder, followed by edit->paste.
* Left-click the file to select it and use the key combination ctrl + c to copy the file, then go the the destination and press ctrl + v.

If something ever happens to your data, you can always reinstall Sunbird, then replace the default file (empty) with your backup file containing all of your data.

Hope this helps,
John

Thank you SO much John! I appreciate it very much. I copied the .ics file to my external USB drive. I hope I never have to use the data, but you never know. Thanks also to Bob for his input. I hope someday I am knowledgeable anought to contribute to answers on this forum. I can't believe how helpful this site is. Thanks again!!
