Mozilla Firefox and Java

Sep 25, 2005 11:06AM PDT

Installed Mozilla Forefox 1.0.7 and Java jre-1_5_0_04-windows-i586-p (full version), Windows ME

Extentions

Adblock Filterser.G Updater 0.2.4
Html Validator 0.7.1
NoScript 1.1.3
Adblock v.5 d2 * nightly 39
Forecastfox 0.8.2.1
All-In-One Sidebar 0.5.4
Download Statusbar 0.9.3.1
JavaScript Debugger 0.9.84
Amazing webpage emailer 0.85
IE View 1.2.5

I go to the Java control panel and click on advanced and click on <applet> tag support.

I put a check mark in the Mozilla and Netscape box and I get the message

Unable to change browser settings

Please check that Mozilla or Netscape is properly installed on the system and/or that you have sufficient permissions to system settings.

I have downloaded Mozilla Firefox (full version)
from http://www.mozilla.org/
I have also downloaded Java jre-1_5_0_04-windows-i586-p (full version)

I have tried to uninstall the Java an reinstall it. I also tried to install and uninstall Mozilla Firefox. I even went as far as downloading the full version of Netscape.

I can view Java on Internet Explorer and Netscape (which I already uninstalled) but not on Firefox.

Here is the website I am trying to view that uses Java. If I try to view this the browser locks up. I have to view this in Internet Explorer. I would prefer to view this using Mozilla Firefox.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/nwatl-ir4-loop.html

Like I said I can view it using Internet Explorer but the Java will not install using the control panel. I also went to http://www.mozilla.org/ and got an extention for Java (but it would not install) It downloaded ok but would not install. I even went to http://www.sun.com/ and there was something to import into the registry
(REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\mozilla.org\Mozilla]
"CurrentVersion"="1.5" )

I imported this to the registry and it still doesn't work. I cannot use jre-1_5_0_04-windows-i586-p (full version) with Mozilla Firefox. The Java control panel won't allow it.

Update 5 isn't default yet...
Sep 25, 2005 2:36PM PDT

To my knowledge, version 1.5.0.05 hasn't been officially released yet...it's still stuck in the developer's network. The manual download site is still linking to 1.5.0.04, but you can download 1.5.0.05 by clicking here. I haven't gotten around to installing it yet as the current version's doing just fine, but the release notes indicate that some stability issues have been resolved. While I don't think it will solve your (Rick's) problem, it's worth a try.

Hope this helps,
John

Have you tried...

I had a similar problem, as well as many others, when upgrading to a new version of Firefox up until 1.0.5. I don't know why, but uninstalling Firefox then deleting the install directory (local drive:\program files\firefox) and also my profile (local drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles) prior to installing the new version (followed by Java, Flash, etc) fixed the problem.

The only thing I can figure is that one of the extensions (I had most of the ones you do, plus several more) is the problem. When 1.0.5 was released, I started fresh and only installed a single extension...AdBlock...and uprading to 1.0.6, and now 1.0.7, have been smooth. I did try installing each extension one at a time, then upgrading Firefox, but could never seem to zero on a particular extension. However, since the problem only happened when the extrensions were installed, it has to be somehow related.

Hope this helps,
John

P.S. Remember to back up your bookmarks.html and bookmarks.bak files prior to deleting your profile, then replace the "default" files once 1.0.7 is reinstalled.

Is the problem actually stopping Java applets from playing? I have Java 1.5 installed on XP and use Firefox. I get the same error message but that doesn't stop Java applets from running OK. There are no Java plugin files in the Firefox Plugins directory. I believe everything in linked via the Registry (maybe that's just an XP thing though).

If Java applets are not working, perhaps try copying the plugin files (any file names beginning with 'NP') from the Java directory to Firefox's Plugins directory, if they are not already there. The files can always be removed again if this proves not to work.

I did as

I did as you suggested and I now can view Java using Mozilla Firefox, However if I go to the control panel and open the Java control panel and click on advanced then applets, I still cannot put a check mark in the box. Still get the error message

Strange...
Sep 26, 2005 5:50AM PDT

I had never changed/used <APPLET> tag support before, but I just received the same error: ''Unable to change Browser Settings Please check that Mozilla or Netscape is properly installed on the system and/or that you have sufficient permissions to change system settings.'' It happens with Sun's Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 1.5.0.04 and 1.5.0.05, and with the past several versions of Firefox. I checked Sun's support site but was not allowed to access the articles...registered users only. A general web search turned up just one match, but it was not helpful, and Mozilla.org has nothing about it. While it does appear to be a bug, everything seems to be working fine, at least for the time being.

John

P.S. Did you install Firefox into a custom directory as I did? Perhaps that's the reason for the error? (I'll test it and give a shout back.)

Tolerable?
Sep 26, 2005 6:01AM PDT

I think many seem to get the error message (I talked to someone else who does). I seem to remember always having had it since that checkbox was introduced. A little annoying maybe but providing Java works, or can be got working, then maybe the glitch is tolerable. Perhaps it will be cured in a future release.

Pudgy, I get the same
Sep 26, 2005 6:05AM PDT

error message that applets for Mozella Firefox cannot be changed when the box is checked... says to check for proper installation of Firefox.

Java is working with Firefox... so the mystery remains. I'm leaving well enough alone.

A long time ago
Sep 26, 2005 6:37PM PDT

A long time ago in a distant galaxy,

I used Netscape. If I went in and checked the box, it allowed Java to work with both. I couldn't figure out if it was the Java program or Mozilla Firefox. However when I go to the website I had in question, If is using the Java program. It just doesn't recognize it in the Java control panel.

I think Glenn is right, Just leave it alone. If it's not broke, Don't try to fix it.

Thanks everyone for your help with this matter. When I hit the lottery, Maybe I'll be able to afford a new system.

Thanks again

Rick K

Just become a US citizen...
Sep 27, 2005 2:26AM PDT

If you're from another country, particularly Kenya, just come to the US, particularly Iowa, and become a citizen. That's all it took for Moses Bittok, who gained US citizenship and won a $1.89 million lottery jackpot in the same day. (See article.) Talk about welcoming him to America!

If you are already a US citizen, don't feel bad...there's a workaround. Just go start->run-> expatriation, folowed by start->run->naturalization. If something goes wrong, simply use System Restore to a few months earlier and try it again using the name ''Moses.'' Happy

And I thought (that can be dangerous) that when we were doing the Java, that it did something to your computer.

Really, I'm in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
