Mozilla Firefox address bar question

by TigerJon73 / January 27, 2009 9:25 AM PST

I have Ver 3.0.5 and cannot figure out how to tweak the dropdown history to my liking. Unlike the previous versions that work more IE, this version seems to only remember commonly viewed sites. Is there a way to change this to record the last 20 or so sites I've visited? Thanks.

That is the Awesome Bar...
by John.Wilkinson / January 27, 2009 3:09 PM PST

It is designed to display the most likely matches based on frequency and recency of visit, combining bookmarks with history.

To disable this, type about:config into the address bar, accept the disclaimer, and search for both places.frecency.bookmarkVisitBonus and places.frecency.unvisitedBookmarkBonus, double-clicking each one to set the value to 0. Restart the browser and bookmarks should be excluded from that autocomplete listing.

Hope this helps,

Doesn't work
by TigerJon73 / January 29, 2009 9:17 AM PST

I tried the two steps you speak of to no avail. Any other suggestions? Surly there is an option for the dropdown to list the last 15 or 20 websites visited in order of visit. Thanks.

I think the addendum to the instructions to make it work is restart the computer. After I restarted bookmarks are now gone from the not quite so Awful bar

try this

Type www

and you'll see things starting to drop down. If you do NOT want this stored URL anymore, then hit the delete button when the mouse is over the url. This will delete the url from the dropdown menu. This works for many things.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have set the values for the two items to 0 and immediately restarted. Still the same.

It may take time...
by John.Wilkinson / February 2, 2009 8:01 AM PST

Firefox builds up your "frecency" score over time, so if the bookmark frecency scores have been built up it may take time for the non-bookmark scores to surpass them. One possible workaround is to change the values as follow:

places.frecency.defaultVisitBonus = 100000
places.frecency.linkVisitBonus = 100000
places.frecency.typedVisitBonus = 100000

That should enable you to quickly surpass the existing frecency scores.

To clear the drop down simply highlight the one you want to get rid of and then hit shift delete.
