moving sucessfully from win98 to win xt

I understand that in the situation that I just went through where I had to purchase a win xp os to replace the win 98 system where i accidently destroyed the win 98 disk, It was also imperative that I up grade all the other hardware and driver's to the same new os taking over.
if I assume anything wrong in this writing, please let me know. I especially found alot of trouble in getting the four speakers to work correctly. they ran ok under win98. the sales dept from circuit city told me that I must also purchase software that enabled them to run correctly under win xp. only two speakers would ever work for me right after the 98/os disk shattered in the cd drive and I tried running under win xp. Error 'ox 80040201-an event was unable to involve any of the the subscribers, occurred and ended that way of getting free. As of now I am totally loas of what to do .

The sales representative makes money by selling you what you may not need.

Try this: Format the drive and reinstall XP. In the hardware profile, look at the sound card. Go to the manufacturer of the sound card and look for compatiblr software. Most drivers are free and older legacy systems have free downloads- the exceptions being certain sgi.
