General discussion

moving mp3s from my pc to my g4

Aug 14, 2005 7:29AM PDT

Hi all...I'm new in here and have a question that is probably rather elementary.

I would like to move all my music files from my windows xp machine to my g4, which is running 10.2.8. There are over 2000 files to be moved, or I'd just use the cd burning method.

I had assumed that it was possible to do this with only a cat 5 cable, but I have found a lot of software that supposedly makes the transfer easier. However, I only want to move the files this once and don't think spending any $ is justified...unless it can't be helped.

Can anyone help me out? I'm pretty new to this, especially from the windows end.

Thanks much!

Kate

You could buy an external hard drive, they will serve you well, you could use it so the investment would be alright.

External HD

Kate,
If you decide to go this route, make sure that the external HD you get has USB 2.0 AND Firewire (IEEE1394).
The USB works best on the PC while the Firewire works best on the Mac.

Transfer

With the aid of a Cross-Over Ethernet cable you can accomplish this quite easily. Before we go there though, do both these machines share an internet connection through a Router?
If NO,
Get the Cross-Over cable from anywhere that sells cat 5 cable. I MUST be cross-over.
Create a folder on the XP machine and share the contents of it. Set the permissions for everyone, Read and Write. You could also share your Music folder, or the one with all the music files in it.
Plug in the cable at the PC and MAc and reboot the PC.
Go to the Go menu and, hopefully, you will see the PC sitting there waiting for you. On 10.2 I think it was "Connect to server".
Log onto the XP machine using your XP name and password. If the folder you shared was your music folder, you should see all the files. Drag them to the Mac.
If the two machines are connected to a router, then there is no need for the X-over cable as the two machines are already joined together. Just do the sharing thing and all should be well.

Good luck, let us know how you got on

Still can't get it to work
Aug 21, 2005 5:24AM PDT

Hey everyone. I still can't get the PC to show up on the Mac...I am probably missing something simple. Both are hooked up to the Linksys router, both are running the internet perfectly, the files are shared on the PC, and my personal and windows file sharing is on in the G4. I've restarted several times. What the heck am I missing?

Thanks for your help!

File Sharing
Aug 21, 2005 6:45AM PDT

If the folder containing your files is Shared AND the XP firewall is OFF, the XP machine should appear in the GO/Network window.
Question: can you connect to the G4 from the XP machine?
Make sure you have Windows Files sharing turned on, System Preferences/Sharing.
If you can connect one way, work with that. Just push you files to the G4 instead of pulling them.

aha!

I had an aha! moment when you asked about the firewall...I had forgotten to disable the virus scan. Oops. Anyway, everything is working great now...I'm in the process of moving it all over. Thanks again!!
