Question

moving files from sl to lion MBP via ethernet

May 10, 2012 11:14PM PDT

Am trying to transfer files from my old macbook 10.6.8 to new MPB 10.7.4. Would prefer to use Migration Assistant via Ethernet (faster than wireless, which I already tried; says it will take 45+ hours!) and have connected ether net cable to both machines. The new one says "Connected" in the networks panel, but the old one does not; seems to want to find internet. What network settings do I need to use to get the old one to see the new one? Thanks.

Answer
Wasn't there some number that you had to enter
May 11, 2012 3:00AM PDT

to connect the two computers together?

Take a look at this KB from Apple, contains all you need to know about Migration Assistant in Lion

Are you using a regular ethernet cable, not cross-over, directly between the two computers?

No hubs or switches?

Transfer complete, more questions
May 11, 2012 5:19AM PDT

I finally got the transfer to work. I had read about crossover cables, etc., but was not sure which type I had. I just kept switching out the cables until I found one that worked. Got the numbers to match and the transfer took about 3 hours. The files are in place, but many don't work properly or at all. My Entourage Identity was missing, so I copied that from the old computer and put it in place. Entourage still won't run; keeps trying to use Microsoft assistant. Also Indd won't run, although Illus. and PS work. I'm thinking of making a clone of the old drive and copying it to the new drive, taking it back to Snow Leopard. Have read mixed reviews of that; some say it will work, and others say it will not. Any thoughts?

copy the entire Microsoft folder from your Documents folder,

and put it in the same place on the new one.
Then, run the Microsoft Updater to bring your copy of Entourage up to speed.
It will probably work after that.

The Migration Assistant works best when there is no other account on the computer you are moving to.

Moving folder didin't work
May 12, 2012 1:48AM PDT

I moved the entire folder, as suggested, but Office programs still start up with the Setup and go to the endless loop. I have read that Microsoft has deliberately made migration not work to thwart piracy. Wish that were posted somewhere... It is said that one must go through a very elaborate manual trashing of all Office files and folders (no easy uninstall, apparently) and then reinstall from disks. Sigh... The other option is the one I mentioned above: making a bootable clone of the old MB drive onto an external drive, and then copying it to the new computer, completely replacing the contents. That would be fine with me, if it will work. I have read some places that it will, and others that it will not. Do you know?

Do not migrate Office Apps.

Sorry but it's been said before and while you can debate why or other aspects I think these apps need to be installed.

agreed, but,

once reinstalled, the move of the MS Folder from the Documents folder will re-apply the identity that was previously in use.
Along with all the emails and stuff

Sorry, I assume that Office had been reinstalled and not just migrated
